Renegades' Homesteading Resolution For 2018

Hey Everyone, this post is a submission to @kiaraantonoviche #homesteadingchallenge #7 - Share a Homesteading Resolution for 2018. The challenge was sort of a kick-in-the-pants to start posting more about our homestead plans.

Our homestead resolution for 2018 is to build our home! It's pretty hard to homestead without one and we need more room for our growing family.

As some of you may know, Aimee and I are currently living in a tiny house that we built ourselves and we also purchased a 50 acre homestead property in 2016. We were originally planning on building a small house out there the summer of 2017. Even knowing we had a child on the way, I thought I could handle this project but our lives got a little more complicated when we found out we were actually expecting twins!

The extra stress and time requirements for two newborns really took a toll on us so we decided to postpone one more year. After building a tiny house, we knew that having ample time to plan, organize and execute was important; I really don't want to make any major mistakes on this project.

There are a lot more details, and backstory, I will get into in future posts but for now I will just summarize the basics of this project.

We will be building a modest house without a basement on our 50 acre property.

Floor Plans

As you can see from the plans above, we have chosen a 896 sqft. house. With no basement, the stairs in the center of the house will be removed leaving room for a wood stove. We will most likely be building an addition, less than 100sqft., to the side of the house as well that will act as a mechanical and boot room. We can build up to 1000 sqft. for this house to be considered a "garden house." Keeping this status will give us the option to build a larger house, with a basement, in the future on our property.

While we are using a set of standard plans, we will be making key modifications to the house to make it more energy efficient and off-grid capable.

I don't have the hard numbers for the total cost of the project yet but it will likely exceed $100k.

Building Location

As for the location of the house I think a few pictures are in order.

yardThe house will be approximately where the dilapidated shed is currently sitting. We will have to remove some trees in that area to make room for the house.

OverviewThis aerial shot shows approximately where the yard site will be in red and the driveway in yellow. The trees within the red outline will be removed.

With the construction skills I learned building the tiny house, I am fairly confident I will be able to do a lot of the work myself. I also have friends and relatives who work in key trades who can help with tasks such as electrical, heating, and earth moving. Contractors will be hired as necessary for tasks such as digging a well, and pouring the foundation to speed our progress along.

During these winter months, we are working on applying for permits and making arrangements with contractors. Earth moving for the yard site and driveway will start on the May long weekend. Following shortly after will be the foundation for the house. We want to be moved into the house before the start of the next winter, even if there is finishing work left to do.

Wow twins! You're fast forwarding the family! Sounds like you have a busy year ahead of you. I wish you the best of luck with it all.

Thank You!

We actually had a few friends that started having kids before us and now we are either caught up to them or past them in the number of kids!

It IS going to be crazy but I am sure it will all work out in the end.

Pretty ambitious plans. Kudos to you for taking on most of the work yourself. That will help keep the costs down. I was pretty impressed with your tiny house. What will become of that cute and efficient tiny home?

I'm really not looking forward to all the work to be honest, I'm busy enough as it is but like you said it will help us keep the price down.

We will still be using the tiny house until the fall at least. After that not really sure. We may use it as a guest house or if we can afford another property or lake lot at some point we might drag it out there and take the wheels and axles off to use it as a cabin. We could also sell it. So we have a few options but are still not decided.

You could also use it as a rental and get some income out of it to buy another property... just thinkin' out loud.

Awesome site for the new house, btw! That view is breathtaking...

Thanks, we looked for a few years before we found this property. It has pretty much everything we wanted except warm weather and a little closer to the city but other then that it is near perfect.

Wow! I'm excited to see the progress! You've been entered into the challenge, thank you!

Awesome. I'm interested to read through the entries, did you get quite a few? The only one I read so far was by @gardengirlcanada and it was very good.

I've gotten about 22 entries so far - the most we've ever seen for the homesteading challenge!!! The winning announcement on Monday will have a list of all of them in case people want to read them

Wow, that is an impressive number.

Thank you for participating in the most recent #homesteadingchallenge! This comment is to inform you that the winner and a few honorable mentions have just been announced! I hope to see you in future contests!

What an amazing property. The view from your future house is spectacular! Definitely a lot of work but once it's all finished I imagine that'll be a satisfying feeling of accomplishment. Look forward to your updates!

Some of that hill blocking the view is going to get flattened out a bit so hopefully the view is even better.

What an awesome homesteading resolution, looking forward to your future posts and following your journey! Thanks for sharing :-)

You're welcome. I enjoy posting about it and thanks for following!

Wow! Look at that land - it's beautiful. I hope you can put your implement your rather ambitious plans and build tine house v2.0 Building the house while juggling baby twins sure is challenge, but on the other hand - these twins sure have a tough dad :)

It should definitely be interesting this summer.

A beautiful place to build! Well done. Keep us informed.

A lot of space is needed to build the house. At least how many places work is done.

Not sure what you mean in the second sentence.

thank you for sharing, I really like your post and I will wait for your next post, I hope you can visit my blog at @sanu thank you
