Quail Eggs. A Super food, profit maker and a Homesteaders Dream!
Quail themselves can be kept in a small area, they cost very little to startup and maintain. They will provide you and your family with healthy eggs and meat
And an additional you profit too!
Their droppings are fantastic for fertilizer or compost heap. An added bonus
Chicken, bantam, and quail eggs
I have for many years farmed chickens and quail together, but don't favor one above the other. Both species are important for providing home food, plus an income
These chicks are both a few days old. The little chaps, the Jumbo quail are very fast and agile at this age compared to their fowl companions
Below is a comparative look at the differences between laying chickens and quail
LAYING FOWLS
I have based this comparison on one of South Africa's most popular free range laying bird
Egg weight: A large egg in SA is 51 grams
Their eggs take 21 days to hatch
The chick takes +- 21 weeks to laying their first egg, which will be fertile at +-23 weeks old
A free range chicken will eat +-150 grams of feed a day. This figure is very dependent on the amount of food available on the land they range on, season of the year, how active they are etc.
On average they will lay well for two years. My daughter @buckaroo had these birds and they were still laying well after three and a half years! - Most of their feed is of vegetable cuttings and a few handfuls of mixed seed
Noise can be a problem in the city
They can be successfully free ranged
They need nest boxes and will sit on and hatch their own eggs
Cages need to be walk in heights with perches
This type of cage can also be used for quail !
JUMBO QUAIL
Egg weight average 12 grams
Eggs take 16 days to hatch
Their first egg is laid at eight weeks and the quail are fully grown and fertile between ten and twelve weeks of age
Quail egg in salads, pickled eggs, curried eggs, fried, scrambled or boiled eggs. Any way you eat em they healthy and tasty!
Use them as an exotic starter . . .
They eat +-22 grams a day but cannot be free ranged as they are not territorial and go where the wind takes them
Noise is no problem with them in the city home. Most people love their gentle call. They lay for a 12 to 15 months
They don't use nest boxes, laying eggs all over the ground and wont hatch their own eggs. Saying which, with the right knowledge they will lay and rear their chicks (You welcome to ask me how)
They can be caged in almost any type of cage because they never perch, but spend their entire lives on the ground
An example of a mobile grass cage, with or without wheels, its eight 450 mm / 18 Inches. A simple and economical cage for a small beginning
The Bush Cage is great for quail or small quantities of chicken too
I'll be posting another blog on quail shortly . . .
