PASTURE BUILDING VLOG

THE NEED FOR SEED

IMG_6386.JPG

Here you can see one of the fields that we will be using for pasture to help feed our sheep, goats, and the cow. Not all that long ago it was a lush field with tall green grass everywhere. However, in an effort to add more beneficial plants to the pasture, we allowed the sheep to aggressively graze and cut the grass really short. This will help the other plants as they try to grow from seed, since it will reduce the competition for sunlight.

This is the mixture that I used when I sowed the seed. It contains Buckwheat, Sainfoin, Birdsfoot Trefoil, Daikon Radish, Vetch, Alfalfa, White Clover, Barley, and some Kale. Each plant brings some benefits to the table, and some are perennial, so once they get established they should be back for years to come.

To top things off I covered some of the field with a mixture of straw and manure. The straw was once used for animal bedding, but now that it is soiled, it still has a role to play. When you are dealing with as much rock and clay as we are, things like this can really help build up the soil over time. Eventually I plan on trying a very concentrated method to build up our pastures, but for now we are just getting things going. Thanks for checking it out!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Love it man! You folks are living like true Americans..."Waste not, want not," etc. Always enjoy your blogs and vlogs...(and yes, that's coming from a damn Yankee from WAY up north!)

Thanks man. It means a lot for me to hear that.

That's a lot of plants all as once. Would really like to know how the pasture goes.

The straw turning into soil would take rather long wouldn't it?

The straw helps shade the new seeds, retains some moisture for them, and eventually breaks down. Once the plants grow up past the straw they will hold it in place, and it'll act like a small layer of mulch too.

pasture building is the first and essential part needed inorder to raise live stock in a given area.
I wasnt to sure about how to make a good pasture building, but Im able to pick one or two things from what you have revealed in this post.
I must say that You are doing a very good job here sir.
I will use this technique to start mine.
Thanks alot for sharing @papa-pepper

I am trying. All I can do is learn, apply, and try. Thanks @roman3~

In as much as the sheeps will be grazing the grasses, indirectly adding manure to the land through their faeces when mixed with the soil. With this, the seeds can be able to grow

Oh yeah! That's some great fertilizer!

This is a good feeds for animals nutrient.love your adventure .
