The Garden And The Sea, The Mermaid Gardening Method.

Recently I noticed the growing trend of using seaweed as mulch in gardens. This intrigued me. In the fall a lot of seaweed washes up on the beach and rots. It feeds thousands of tiny flies that swarm in little tornados and get stuck in your hair.

Seaweed keeps slugs away because of its salt content and the sharp edges it gets when it dries and hardens. It also helps with out of control weeds and keeps the soil moist. I recently created two beds and the grass is out of control. I weed it, but it won't stop pumping out lawn. I told it that it's not a lawn anymore, but it refuses to give up its wild nature for my garden plans. And I have to say I understand that.

Seaweed is an amazing fertilizer. It is rich in beneficial trace minerals and hormones that stimulate plant growth. It is high in carbohydrates which are an essential building block in growing plants. It is also low in cellulose so it breaks down fast. Because of all its great micronutrients, it will boost your lethargic plants.

One thing that excited me about seaweed, it helps break up dense soil. We are starting to build up our soil at our homestead. It is very dense and full of clay and low on nutrients. I can't wait to see the seaweed do its magic in my garden.

And last but not least.... ITS FREE!!!!

So off to my favorite beach to gather some ocean produce for my homestead.

When I arrive I see a ton of seaweed above the shoreline. You want it freshly washed up, dry and light.

It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining, there was no wind. This beach usually has an offshore breeze and is always colder than the surrounding area. But today was warm and calm, the ocean lazy and napping as far as the eye could see.

The next morning I rinsed the seaweed, to remove some of the salt. The blogs I have read online say the salt is not a problem, but I wanted to be extra careful with my plants.

I took a bunch of the seaweed and with my loppers, I cut it into smaller more manageable pieces.

Make sure to rinse and oil your tools after cutting seaweed, the salt will rust them.

First August Garden needed some love. It has been taking care of me and it was time to return the favor. I added some wood mulch to it and topped it with colorful seaweed.

The smell of the sea filled my early morning garden, making me feel like a sleepy gardening mermaid.

Next up was my strawberry bed. I had neglected these poor strawberries before planting them and the bed was full of grass. The strawberries also had slug problems at times. I am hoping the seaweed will remedy that.

I still had some seaweed left to do September garden.

I took some long pieces and lined my bed for further slug protection.

I can't wait to see how my plants like this superfood punch of life. Making soil is a very important part of gardening and homesteading. Soil improvement is the first thing that can uplift your garden like good food can uplift us.

Big Love.

Pleasantly surprised to find the dual posts of you and @happymoneyman. He showed the collection phase, and the inspiration behind it, and you show the application and benefits. "The smell of the sea filled my early morning garden, making me feel like a sleepy gardening mermaid." That was hilarious poetry, and a nice throwback to your love of the sea, right? Never knew this could improve clay soil. Will have to try.

I am so glad you liked the new thing @happymoneyman and I are trying! It was really fun day at the beach with the dog. I was excited to do seaweed in the garden because of my love for the sea, I am tickeled you caught my poem :) Thank you. It is so nice when someone reads my stuff and lets in roll around in their head and really hear it. Thank you for taking your time with my posts and then letting me know. I have never written before steemit, maybe a poem on a napkin scribbled then tossed for fear of discovery, but never something mean to be read by another. Its exciting and scary. I am enjoying it. Thanks again @creativetruth, our exchanges have been wonderful.

Beautiful pictures! I hope to see more from you. Keep Steeming!

Thank you so very much for your encouragement and support. I want you to know it really makes me excited to write and be received. I have never shared any of my creative self before, it was always stored away. Steemit has been a game changer for me not even having fb. Thanks for all your work encouraging minnows like me. Hope your having an amazing week.

Rally nice post, well done. So happy to see such a sustainable and successful adventure! Not much more important than growing your own food and doing it sustainably is KEY!

Yes to much salt can be a problem but also if you want to keep the slugs away u need the salt....so just depends.

Hope you keep us updated on this fantastic experiment!

The "sleepy gardening mermaid" was hilarious :)). I imagine a redneck mermaid sleeping with s straw in her mouth, jean overalls, a straw hat for shade on her face, and some tan lines on her arms. Joking aside it's awesome seeing your adventures in the garden, really curious how things will shape out in the coming months.
P.s If the snails get on your nerves you should come up with a nickname for them too :)

Hahaha, that would be a really cute painting. I am really looking forward to seeing how things go too, I didn't grow very much last winter. I nickname everything. lol.

Btw I'm not implying you are a redneck just to be clear :P it's just how my imagination works

Hahaha! Thanks, even if you were I wouldn't be mad. People have frantically called me all kinds of labels all my life to try to find one I fit into. I collect them like shoes and try them on and giggle at how funny I look with them on. I love it. I was hoping to collect redneck, I though it would look good with my tattoos ;) And that is how my imagination works. You and your imagination are most welcome on my blog, no editing needed.

Shut yhe front door!! Mind blown, i had no idea, thank you. Some of your pictures are not working btw. Thanks again I love this method. Reusing what the earth gave us!

The earth is the original provider, thank you so much for looking. I am glad you liked it. It was so easy, if you ever have to many tomatoes try it.

Love it @lifemovedbysteem they say you learn something new every day, well certainly true for me today. I have an allotment and am a keen veg gardener but I never knew this! Will have to get some seaweed next time I am beach walking or maybe collect some in a bag while scuba diving :) great postIMG_20160924_131907984.jpg
The allotment which is going to get the seaweed treatment!

Thank you so much! The seaweed is working wonders, I highly recommend it! Thanks for checking out my blog!

Wow somehow the photo you sent didn't load when I replied to you. What a lovely garden space, good for you finding a place to participate in growing and your resource connection!

You two are amazing!! I will be bringing my gardening questions to you guys from now on!! Thanks Ren!! Steem on!!

Thank you @paradise-found, I would love to chat gardening with you. Did you get chickens? Tell me when you do, we can swap pictures of our feathered friends.

I can't really get chicken's until spring. They wouldn't survive the winter here. It takes 6 months to feather out I'm told. The spring would be the best time, then they would be feathered out for the next fall-winter season. So next spring would be best for getting the pullets. Thanks Ren!! :-D
