Native Western Pollinator The Alkali Bee
Nomia melanderi, a chief pollinator of Alfalfa.

While sitting atop the cliff in the middle of the Kettle Crest and Colville National forest over the weekend, amongst the many insects to visit me was this little Alkali Bee. She was not very big, smaller than a Honeybee, as you can see compared to my fingers. The Alkali Bees are solitary ground nesting bees that make small burrows in salty-alkali soils. In the forest those soils are generally near rock out croppings that are less covered in soil and vegetation.
While researching this amazing little bee I found this reference to their technique in pollinating the alfalfa flowers. I never knew that the flowers were such that they resisted pollination by "average" insects.
Most importantly - they are willing to pollinate flowers of the pea family, such as the introduced alfalfa, that give a floral “slap-in-the-face”. Alfalfa flowers require a specialized technique because of their complicated structure; they have to be “tripped”. The male and female parts of the flower are not exposed but enclosed inside the lower petal, the “keel”, so called because of its shape. The bee has to land on it and put a little pressure that snaps it open exposing the anthers with their pollen and the stigma.

Now that I have seen the tunnels I know what to look for on the surface. Little tiny tunnel mounds sticking up and with a number of them located nearby. I have seen them before but now I will look for them specifically. Though I don't have any alfalfa on the farm, it is within a mile of us, I am sure we still have Alkali Bees nesting here.
The beneficial insects are really everywhere. The more I research the more I find that live on or right around the farm.

In my area we are a big producer of alfalfa seed and they put signs up to slow down for the Alkali Bees.
But the majority of the Alfalfa seed farmers around here use the Leaf Cutter Bee.
Then big honey bees set off the Alfalfa flower and get b!#&# slapped. Lol
This bee thing is more complicated than I ever would have thought.
Interesting. I have seen some leaf cutting bees around the farm but only about as many as the Alkali, which is far less than the number of Honeybees I see. We just don't have much seed alfalfa grown locally, mainly just for hay.
Hah hah! Alfalfa flower POPS, smacks the bee, and throws the bee back off the flower like debris from an explosion. Bee flies off pissed, bruised, and embarrassed.
Dah ha ha ha
Set out a board with a bunch of 1/4 inch holes in it and see how many leaf cutters you can get. I want to try that at my house.
Shit! I just realized the mason bee "houses" that are sold are mimicking the tunnel nests of the Sweat Bees. The same "houses" should work for all the other tunnel nesting bees. Or like you said, just drill a bunch of 1/4" holes for them to find.
Just passed this sign while at work.
That is what I was seeing, Touchet is one of the main places referenced for Alkali. Super cool you live where there are so many of them!
I maintain all the powerlines in that area, well most of them anyway.
Lost of Alkali bees and leaf cutters. They store the leaf cutter bees in cold storage shops all over the place. If their power goes out for too long and it warms up inside the shop—- the bees hatch and they lose out big the next year or that same year if they hatch too early.
Heck ya 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Leaf cutter cleaning it’s face. Just found this guys by a meter base
