Seeding and planting Sweet (Bulgarian) Peppers at home. My experience (En/Ru)

in #homesteading6 years ago (edited)

EN. A few days ago I opened the gargening season 2018. Usually we start with planting sweet (Bulgarian) peppers, since they need the most time for sprouting. Tomatoes and cabbages are planned to be the next.

RU.

Now I want to share with you the experience of growing plants in a confined space. We do not have much space for seedlings as there is no loggia or a special greenhouse. Therefore, the seedlings are grown on the windowsill, slightly squeezing the houseplants.

In order not to guess about the quality of seeds and get plants for sure, we put them into the ground already sprouted. For seed germination, a piece of textile is needed, for example, taken from an old pillowcase or T-shirt (but not synthetic).

Last year, we tried paper towels, but it turned out to be a bad idea, as the paper gets wet, it breaks up into pieces and we find different sorts of seeds mixed together.
A piece of cloth is signed, wetted with water and seeds are wrapped in it. For each variety there is a separate piece

All this is placed in a glass jar, closed with a disposable plastic bag and placed in a warm place.
It is necessary to ensure that the cloth and seeds do not dry out and remain moist, and at the same time do not lie in a pool of water. I usually check them once a day, sometimes watering.

About a week (maybe a little more), you will see the first sprouts. Although in fact it is not sprouts but roots:-) the sprout still remains in the seed.

Carefully take them one by one and plant into a prepared box with a ground substrate, trying not to damage the root.

We use a universal substrate, which is suitable for both seedlings and for unpretentious indoor plants. The price is about $ 1 for a 10 liter package.
As for the special box... I already wrote that we do not have enough place for cassettes and other cumbersome devices... and also our plants along with us will have to overcome a long way from home to the garden in public transport... so, try not to to laugh, after learning that a special box is an empty PET package from the juice.

This was our method. I do not claim that it is perfect, and that all the other gardeners in Ukraine do just the same. But if you live in a small apartment, not in a private house, you do not have a wide choice. Both we and our plants have to adapt to existing conditions. This is not for long, with the onset of warm season they will be planted into the open ground.

Thanks for sharing this! It's not quite time for us to plant things here in the US, but when it is, I'll definitely be using the germination trick with the cloth. It looks like you're going to have a great garden this year. I hope to see many more posts about the fruits of your labor!

We also have not yet said goodbye to the winter, there is still about 30-50 cm of snow everywhere. But some work must be done in advance. Then with the onset of heat, approximately in the middle-end of May, it will be possible to plant to the open ground already grown plants, almost ready for flowering.

I always do myself best to get a good harvest, but there are some circumstances we cannot predict or cope with them (like weather conditions). In these cases we can only hope for God's help.
Thank you for the support. Be sure that if my work bring positive results I will share them:-)

That's good to know. My wife has an uncle who is an avid gardener and has been for years, so we use him as a resource to find out when the best planting times are. We need to figure out what we're going to plant so we can have them ready to go.

Hope to see how your plants turn out!

we use him as a resource to find out when the best planting times are

Wise strategy! listen to the people who have more experience. I trust advices of my mom in these cases :-)

Absolutely awesome. Bonus points for working with what you have. That's what I always try to do. I love all the gardening and planting tips, as I am just starting my first garden. Thank you for the tips and great pictures!

Thank you for reading! I hope my tips will be helpful for you:-)

Wow this was very informative. I tried soaking my seeds for a couple of hours before starting them indoors, but an issue, like you mentioned, not all of them come up. I think the idea of starting them in a cloth type material and picking out the ones that have root sprouts. Overall, great job!

I would be just happy to know that my advice turned out to be useful for someone.
Thank you for dropping by and good luck with your plants!

It must feel so good to start the growth of the plants which will eventually feed you. Great adapting to your situation.

Yeah, it's really great when you have a small plot of land where you can plant something by own hands and then harvest. In good year we can fulfill 70-80% of our need in vegetables, but of course this process requires time and labour. And of course some preparations (like seed germinating) must be done beforehand.
Thank you for your interest to this topic!

What a great idea! It is so disappointing to do a bunch of planting and find out that many of your seeds are bad and won't germinate! Thanks for sharing your process and the beautiful pictures!

You are welcome!
This secret was shared with me by my mother, and it is 100% working. You will not lose, because you plant in the ground only those seeds that already have a sprout. It's like "one shot - one hit!" ;-)))

It is so nice to see little green plants growing! I am so tired of winter!

Me too, but mother-nature has another thought and we have snowfall again:-(

Oh no!!! But....Spring starts today!

I really enjoyed this post! It was inspiring for me and I appreciate the pictures and detailed description. I have always wanted to grow plants in our home until we were ready to start an actual garden outside. It’s good to know this method works and I can do it in my home. The pictures are amazing btw, nice, bright and cheerful! 😃

Thank you for reading, voting and commenting. It's always pleasure for author to have a real positive feedback from the readers.
