New Battery Update April 19th 2018

in #homestead6 years ago

Some of you may recall we had a failure with one of our fuses not blowing properly and it caused an overload to burn up half our battery bank. We since replaced the batteries and defective fuse with new ones. This is a quick look at the new batteries installed and the current holding charge on them. These batteries power our entire off grid tiny home.

These are Exide deep cycle batteries and are 105 AH each:

They seem to be holding a good charge and hit float mode early in the day:

Hi @fixedbydoc,

I'm gathering stories and experiences of people who are successfully living off-grid around the world.

I give free talks weekly in my local communities to raise the awareness about what is possible.

May I feature you in my writeups and talks as one of those examples?

sure. you can find more of my off grid living stuff at fixedbydoc.com ive been 100% off grid for 5yrs now.

wow very nice 👍
Can you live by the solar panels at every weather or do you need to add „normal“ power to your system when it’s very cloudy.

i live 100% on wind and solar and haven't used a generator in a long time. there are no power lines on my property so i could not connect to grid power even if i wanted to. i haven't had any power issues in 5yrs...

That’s really great! Keep on going.

How much did you approx. spend on the solar panels?

they are about $160 each...

Are you enjoying steem?

yes. its fun for a few reasons.

two questions
how much do they cost.
and how much do they weigh.
each.

$89 and weigh about 30-40lbs each... they will last about 5-7 years unless something goes wrong like last time which is very rare.

AHA! so a thousand dollars worth would pretty much power my houseboat and do double duty as ballast!

a $1000 would be about 11 batteries equaling 1100 ah which would be more than enough to power a small house and certainly a boat. .

I'm building a 'battery trough" on top of the keel and under the floor. The boat had twin Volvo Pentas so I expect it can handle the weight.

be sure to vent the batteries to let the gases escape and not blow you up...

that would be a bad day.
I was considering sealed batteries for that very reason.
or perhaps (gasp) lithium ion.

the only batteries i know of that dont gas (even sealed ones) are the AGM batteries and they run around $350 for a 100ah battery. my new ones here are sealed and have a gassing warning. lithium batteries have to be charged just right or BOOOM...
