Why some homeschooling families left Holland - The Oh so 'Liberal' country...

in #homeschooling6 years ago (edited)

Everywhere I go and went in the past, I always hear how 'liberal' my country is, when I tell people where I'm from.
Of course, most people refer to our soft-drug laws, while they automatically assume that everyone in Holland smokes weed.
I usually laugh at those remarks and add that we also all live in windmills, wear wooden shoes and grow tulips next to our weed. But other, better informed individuals (or are they?) might refer to our policies when it comes to euthanasia, same-sex marriage, abortion and prostitution.

A second subject I always hear about when referring to my home country is our 'excellent education system', the fact that most Dutch people are at least bi-lingual and our straightforwardness.

True, our education is seen as one of the best in the world. It is by far not as outrageously expensive to attend college and university as it can be in other countries like the US. But how free are really we when it comes to choosing the right education for our children in the Netherlands? The answer might surprise you.

Freedom of education

Not in every country in Europe it is legal to homeschool your children. In Sweden and Germany for instance it is completely illegal. In Ireland, it is in the constitution that parents can choose to homeschool their kids or send them to a non recognized school, even though this might prove to be harder than you think sometimes. There are countries where parents can get an exemption from sending their children to mainstream school, for instance when the child has great problems in school or because of differing life-style choices. The Netherlands is one of those countries.
Parents can apply for exemption as long as they do this at least one month before the child turns 5. After this, it is still possible to pull a child out of school, but it's a lot harder. Once the family is approved for home education, they have to re-apply each year.

Here in Ireland special assessors assigned to monitor homeschooling families are supposed to visit a family once a year to see where this family is at in regards to homeschooling and their children's progress. -This is in theory, because this proves to be less in most cases. However, in Holland there is no such thing. Families get approved or they don't and that's all there is to it.

Two overly ambitious and power hungry politicians

In 2010, Hugo de Jonge was appointed as alderman with the portfolio of Education, Youth and Family in Rotterdam.
Not long after that he showed his aversion for education that was different from mainstream. In 2013 for instance, he worked hard to get an Islamic high-school in the city to close. Something that happened not long after. In 2015 his eye had fallen on the homeschooling community in the city. He argued that homeschooling does not provide quality education for children and that most families had an exemption due to religion. He also notes that a large percentage of homeschoolers in Rotterdam are of strict Islamic religion, something that has been proven to be incorrect. In his opinion homeschooling is an "unwanted way to block children from a healthy social-emotional development." This is especially funny, because one only has to meet a few homeschooled children to know that this can actually be quite the opposite. After all: bullying happens mostly in school, not so much in the homeschool environment. Hugo de Jonge thought it was a good idea to speak with all 15 families (with 39 children) to find out if all these families were justly exempt from sending their kids to mainstream school. This was approved by Sander Dekker (Secretary of State for Education, Culture and Science) who had similar ideas about homeschooling.

At first, all families received a letter to invite them to city hall to speak with the school attendance officer in order to determine if their exemptions were justified. All but one family did not respond to this letter as they thought it was against their rights to homeschool. They were then threatened with measures that would include a referral to child protection services. It is important to note that this same Hugo de Jonge tried to push forward a new law that would make it compulsory for 'vulnerable' parents to use contraception. In other words: incapable parents, mostly single women with serious addiction, psychiatric problems or intellectual disabilities, or a combination of these.
The issue with this is: where does one draw the line and who gets to decide when a parent is incapable of raising (future) children? Sounds to me like the man would have had aspirations to join the Nazis, if they were still around.

These threats were enough for three families

Three families left Rotterdam for good. One of those families moved to Spain, two to Ireland. One of those families were my friend J., her husband D and their children. When I spoke to J. and she told me what had been going on in Rotterdam I told her to consider coming to Ireland. They were here not long after. I believe they were just in time.
This was in 2016. In 2017 Hugo de Jonge was celebrating a win in court. The judge ruled that families who didn't attend the meetings would be referred to child protection services and maybe even receive a care order.
He also stated that first steps were taken in the right direction as now only 23 children were homeschooled, instead of the earlier 39. This is quite ironic since my friend J. had 6 children in the school going age and the other family here in Ireland had 5. I am not sure if the family in Spain has 1 or 2 children, but it is quite clear that the 'change' in the homeschooling culture can not be measured by his actions. This shows again that the word of a politician and that of the media can not be trusted and is always distorted.

What happened to these politicians?

In 2017, not long after all this happened, Hugo de Jonge said good-bye to the city of Rotterdam to move on to greener pastures. He is now the vice premier of the Netherlands and received an award for politician of the year.
Secretary of State for Education, Culture and Science Sander Dekker is now minister for Privacy Policy, Youth Justice, Copyright Law, and Prevention. Moving up in the world, but over the backs of people who dare to challenge the system. You'd have to wonder if they did all this truly with the welfare of children in mind, or to further their own careers. I could make a guess...
And this is one of the reasons why I am quite happy that I decided to leave the country 7 years ago. OK, my life here hasn't been without hurdles and it is still quite stressful at times. I guess no country is perfect. But here, once you have 'them' off your back, they stay that way for quite a while. In the Netherlands, I am not too sure...

Hi @misslasvegas, that is dreadful what is going on there. I am a keen supporter of homeschooling and unschooling.

I host a radio show every Friday on MSP Waves called The Alternative Lifestyle Show. The show covers homeschooling/unschooling as well as homesteading, prepping, tiny houses, renewable energy etc.

I wondered if you would like to come on the show as a guest sometime?

If you check my profile you will see links to recordings of previous shows if you would like to listen to one.

Hi @pennsif, yes it is dreadful what is happening in Holland. And the bad thing is that things like this are happening all over the place now in Europe and beyond. I'm glad to be in Ireland and not in my own country any more, but even here it's difficult (I'm not sure if you've read any of my Familyprotection posts, I have been to hell and back with the authorities...). I would be honoured to be a guest on your show, hopefully I'll manage to work that around the kids' times somehow LOL. (unless you'd like to hear them yell Mommy all the time haha).

That would be great if you can come on the show to tell us more.

The show is on Fridays, 10pm - midnight UTC.

I will message you on Discord.

Thanks for sharing this, a lot of people gave different opinions ,views ,beliefs about something abt hey know nothing about . And the funny thing is that they pass it on and on to other people . It nice to know someone who knows the truth and better now we could spread the right information .
A very educative post

thank you for stopping by and your feedback!

You don't see in what kind of culture you live in until you step outside the "box", in the real world or in your mind.
In the netherlands the sheep are extremely obedient (and that is an insult to real sheep)
If you ask people the question; If a law say's that someone must do something that he is morally opposed to must that person do what he believes to be wrong, just for the sake of obeying the law.
People have said Yes. This quite shocked me and asking more questions has only showed me that what happened in russia, east germany, china, germany 40-45, can happen in the netherlands too. With your family and "friends" handing you over to the mercanaries of the state. I can tell you; It's very hard to realize that. (Only now it's for different reasons and people can not see the tyranny, because it's looks so different and they are so heavily propagandized from a young age.)

Oh, but it already did happen in the Netherlands. We always hear about those big, bad German Nazis in WWII, but we hardly ever hear about all the Dutch that didn't only co-operate with them but actually sold out their neighbours, children and parents. We hear of them in the history books briefly, but never has a teacher or a book ever told us just how many traitors and backstabbers we had in those days. But we learned about the heroes...they were put on a pedestal. Kinda like what they do now with the 'terror attacks' all around the world, there's always a hero or two to distract from what's really going on.
And you are absolutely right @wordsword: the sheep are extremely obedient. They actually believe they have to pay taxes for all the "liberties" they have...Whatever that means, because you're really only a number in that country. One out of 16 million.

It did happen indeed. I know. Luckily, my grandparents were not one of those, they were the ones hiding jews in the attic. This is all by chance of course that I had such grandparents, but it is the thing that influenced me a lot I guess, and probably had much to do with me being voluntaryist as I look back over the years. I never really stopped asking the why and the how of war.

There was indeed also the NSB and others who just did their job just following orders but you hear nothing, to next to nothing about that.
The only thing that comes to mind is that the jews in amsterdam gave listst with names of jews to the nazi's. But I heard about that because they were not dutch. I'd like to know those other cases where dutch people were involved. But like you said you hear nothing about that.

Thanks for the reply

There was so much going on that most of us have no idea about. If you'd say it out loud, you're either crazy, conspiracy theorist or worse...The story of the second WW is not the way it has been portrayed, not by far. My father is from Amsterdam and lived in de Jordaan. My mother is from the South (Tilburg). Their stories and those of my grandmother conflict some of the stories we learned in school. This was the reason for me to start investigating that at the age of 15. My grandparents were also 'the good ones'. My grandfather was a business man and they were well of. They had one of the first cars in the city. He read 'Mein Kampf' when no one else had. He warned the jews in our area to leave and not to get on those trains to bring them to work camps...At first those 'trains' were voluntary...supposed to bring them to places where there were jobs waiting...Not a lot of people know this. He told them not to get on those, but they didn't believe him. He later helped people escape to Belgium and helped the 'resistance' in and out of the Netherlands. He was later, after the war, severely punished by our own government. Now that I am writing this, I think I have a story LOL. To be continued...

Kudos to you for sticking to your convictions. Moving to a different country for them is no tiny thing! I'm in Germany, and you're right. Here, if you don't send your children to the state school or a recognized alternative, Police may come to your house and escort the child to school.

that is nuts isn't it? That the state has more say about our children than the parents. I know a woman who is German and lived in Germany and homeschooled her son. The only way she got away with it was because they travelled a lot and when they were in Germany they would stay with her father. But always afraid someone would call authorities if they stayed too long. I believe she moved to Ireland too now.

Wow! That is so crazy that he is basically saying that he is the one who made the families send their kids to school when really they appear to have been the ones who moved! It is so crazy how many people believe mainstream media and are so deceived. The truth is out there, but it's not being spread far and wide by the media.

Yes, in this case the truth was there for everyone to see, since they mentioned that some families had moved in the media. But of course, this was only said once and no one remembers this kind of stuff, so no one figures it out. Sad really, people have been so conditioned to believe these people blindly, as if history has taught them nothing.

Why should these things happen if the government is supposed to be in charge of welfare? that's why I support families that move without a doubt is the best they can do

You are absolutely right, the government is a scam in many ways....Thank you for your feedback.

I feel for the folks in the Netherlands that you do not have the choice. I'm a firm believer that parents if they are working towards their child developing to their greatest potential, that they are in the best position to get their child there.

Thanks for sharing this.. in didnt know the details about holland. They sure do seem strict here in many ways, and overbearing. I was visiting a friend a few weeks ago with a new born baby.. l whilst i was there some agent was visiting and processing the baby to get her immediately on the system.. she has to have a passport and was photographed and basically tagged.. it seemed all a bit much to me and i wonder why they need to do this.. its like they seem to own you when u dont have a choice and they can just step in and dictate your lives.. it all sounds like a gross infringement of our birth rights and civil liberties to me.. ohh where are pink floyd when u need them!?

“We dont need no... thought control” hey cps, leave our kids alone!!!!

WOW @eco-alex, this man came to their home? I have never heard of anything like that! Seems a bit over the top huh? Were the parents aware of that he was coming? I am shocked...

Yep he has a whole mobile kit.. fully teched up! Apparently its standard now.. yes they did know.. i made a few subtle sly comments.. lol
