RE: [Homeless] Daily Update #8 - (Day 7 - 16th Street Mall - Downtown Denver!)
I lived right near there on Capitol Hill and worked in many of those buildings during 1993-1994. I was a single mom with a baby walking to work and back home daily. The homeless people would flock to see the baby and touch him and be nice to me and tell me that seeing my son was the highlight of their day. I felt like a celebrity.
One time I was with a work friend and holding my son while we waited for a table outside a restaurant.. A homeless man came and said, "Oh! Can I hold him for a minute?" I let him and stood real close. He was so thankful and just hugged my son so close. My friend almost died and told me I was reckless.
My son turned out to be a friend to all and constantly helps the homeless when he can. I feel very grateful for this time in my life. Thank you for bringing back the memory today. It still looks a beautiful as I remember.
You aren't gonna believe this, but I think that was me.....I was homeless from the mid 80's through the mid 90's. In 93/94 I lived in Denver and hung out on 16th St. I actually remember asking a woman if I could hold her son....he reminded me of myself at that age. Plus I had the hots for the mom....lol!
Not me then. I am not attractive, especially not then. I was the fat lady in accounting.
But seriously - that place is like that. My son went back to see his home when he was 18 and 16th street mall did it for him too. I think it's a protected place. I'm so happy I saw it today. It's a very good memory. So cool you went back like this.
