Sports Eat Me Alive, But, My Desire Lives on

For as long as I can remember, I've been a fan of sports. It stretches back to somewhere around when I was 4-5 and first saw the Washington Redskins logo (my favorite team). I fell in love. The image is still striking to me to this very day. The proud, strong/stoic native Blackfeet Chief we all know as Two Guns White Calf.

In those days, names like John Riggins and Joe Thiesmann were kings of the gridiron on the television where I grew up in Richmond, Virginia. Pat Summerall and John Madden frequently called our games, and it felt like family basics; after church, EVERYBODY made a wild dash home to get changed and head over to my grandfather's house for supper and the game. It was in those moments that the desire to watch began.

Over the years, I've been asked if I enjoy pain, as I've endured a rough fanhood since those early years when my team won three championships within nine years with three different quarterbacks. But still, the desire lives on.

Five years ago, the now-former owner, who said he would NEVER change the name, changed it and then sold the team for 6+ billion. While changed slightly, that desire lives on, bruised and battered. Twisted, abused, disenfranchised, with a new name, it doesn't feel the same, but the desire lives on. A desire to see that team do well. Many my age have moved on...my desire lives on.

Now, we're on the brink of a new era. A new ownership team, a new rookie quarterback, a new coach, and a new attitude on an old pig. But one that still has desire burning deep inside. My desire lives on!
