WORDS!

Have you ever searched for the meaning of the word, WORD on Google?

You will be surprised to find that a small four-letter can have such a long description.

“A single distinct meaningful element of speech or writing, used with others (or sometimes alone) to form a sentence and typically shown with a space on either side when written or printed.”

I love words. For me, words are the start of a conversation, with or without someone else.

From a small age, words formed part of my life. If it was not the words my mom made us spell as kids it was the words my dad made us read in the newspaper. No wonder I like word games so much. I cannot help but smile, the first game on my mobile phone was “Word Hangman”.
Can you remember yours?

Anagrams...

What are Anagrams?

Anagrams are just another word game that you can love and hate. Love when you get them right and hate when it keeps you busy for days.

With anagrams, you have to rearrange the letters of a word to form another word or even words.

Types of anagrams

Word anagrams – You use a word to form another word or words

Phrase anagrams – You use a word to form a phrase, a phrase to form another phrase or a phrase to form another word

You also get easy, hard, VERY hard, and clever anagrams.

THE RULES

There are only two rules in anagrams,

Rule 1: You have to use ALL the letters of the given original word when you build your comprehensible English word.

Rule 2: You can only use a letter once.

Does it sound easy?

Don’t be fooled. Anagrams can be very complex.

How to solve Anagrams

Steps I take to solve anagrams

  1. I check if it is a clever anagram, opposite meanings, same meanings, etc.
  2. When I’m doing quiz solutions I check if there is a specific theme to a quiz.
  3. An example is a quiz about sports, cooking, etc.
  4. I re-write the word with the letters far apart which makes it easier to see the letters clearer or I use our Scrabble board
  5. I look for those double letters or pairs like “ee” and “io”
  6. I leave the vowels and look for consonant patterns. Paint → pnt→ npt = inapt
  7. I look for prefixes. Those “pre” and “un” at the beginning of a word.
  8. I look for suffixes. Those “er” and “ish” at the end of a word
  9. When I get stuck, I put it down, walk away, and return later to give it another try. Funny enough, the 2nd time round it is always easier

Good Anagram solving sites

I like to solve anagrams in the old fashion by moving letters around with pen and paper and ticking off the letters I have used as I go along. Although it is time-consuming I prefer to put my brain to work. After all, there is no fun in solving a word within seconds.

However, I must admit that when I get to the 2nd day and I have not resolved it I do reach for a “helpline”.

Gosh, I was surprised at how many anagram-solving applications are available. Most of these applications have a free entry-level but should you want to make use of the pro-version it doesn’t cost a lot.

DeviceApplication
AndroidAnagram SolverGoogle Play
AndroidCrossword Solver KingGoogle Play
iOSAnagram SolverApp Store
iOSThe Crossword & Anagram SolverApp Store
Web-basedAnagrammerLINK
Web-basedWordplaysLINK

I prefer to use Anagrammer.com as my last resource as it is easy to use and makes use of a variety of dictionaries. I refuse to download any app solver on my phone.

Five main reasons why I like this site

  1. We use it mainly to verify our Scrabble words which results in no in-house fighting
  2. It supports those blank tiles in anagrams
  3. You can share the solution link with others
  4. It is also a problem solver for other word games
  5. I use it for my “Eye Spy with my little eye – Mini contests” searching for words that start with a certain letter

What I don’t like is all the advertisements on the website but if you use the application on a regular basis you might get used to them.

What I love about anagrams

  • You can play on your own
  • You can challenge yourself
  • They are lots of fun to do
  • They will keep you busy for hours
  • They are great for passing time like when you are waiting in the doctor’s consulting room
  • You keep your brain active
  • There are so many varieties of anagram games
  • You are forever learning new words and improving your vocabulary
  • You learn the correct spelling of words

Gary Player, a South African golf player, once said “The more I practice, the luckier I get.” It is exactly the same with anagrams.
The more you practice the quicker you will learn to unscramble those words and to build new ones.

Get practicing! The “Big 80” is coming your way soon!

¡PALABRAS!

  • Puedes jugar solo
  • Son divertidos de hacer
  • Te mantendrán ocupado durante horas
  • Mantienes tu cerebro activo
  • Hay tantas variedades
  • Siempre estás aprendiendo nuevas palabras y mejorando tu vocabulario
  • Aprendes la ortografía correcta de las palabras

Gary Player, un golfista sudafricano, dijo una vez "Cuanto más practico, más suerte tengo". Es exactamente lo mismo con los anagramas.
Cuanto más practiques, más rápido aprenderás a descifrar esas palabras y construir otras nuevas.

¡Ponte a practicar! <.b> Los “Grandes 80” ¡ llegará pronto!

Hello friend, I will tell you that I love words, I don't know if I have told you before. And of course I love word games, I also love solving puzzles, and when the others give up I'm still there, hahaha, because I love these types of games.

I really liked your explanation. Perhaps for those of us who speak Spanish and are not completely fluent in English, it will be more difficult to solve the anagrams, but the problem has been solved with the applications you have shared, great! I think it could be a good tool for the big 80 contest.

We'll see how it goes...

Greetings and a hug for you🤗🌸

Hello!

It was so nice to see a comment from you.
First allow me to wish you and your family a beautiful 2023. I hope that it will be filled with joy and happiness.

It is great to know that you also like word games. One thing I do know, they can keep us busy for hours but I still prefer letters to numbers.

I am glad that I could help those who are not fluent in English. I first post the wrong post, English version only, and was so glad that my hubby noticed it and I could quickly edit and post the post that included the Spanish translation. I hope it was okay and that we are going to see plenty of Steemians taking part in the Big 80.

Anagrams are excellent ways in which to learn the English language and to better the quality of posts.

A big 🐻 👐all the way back to you!

Oh, it's a pity, I didn't study English well at school and at the institute. Then we didn't see the need for it. Especially in spoken English. We were taught to read. And at the Institute "technical English".
I am glad that my youngest daughter is successfully studying English.

Anagrams. This is a very interesting and developing activity! There are many games of this kind and we often play them at home.
When we drive in a car, we always play a game - "Words". The first letter of a word is the last letter of the previous one. In this way we have developed the vocabulary of our youngest daughter. It is very useful not only for children, but also for adults!

Congratulations!

TEAM 4 CURATORS

Oh, thank you so much @sduttaskitchen!

Okay, I will remember your word game when next we travel on the long road.
We normally play a game of cricket with different colors of cars different amount of runs. In the end the one with the most runs, the winner.
I can tell you one thing, there is nothing wrong with your English. I hope I’m going to see you take part in the Big 80 when it launches.

This your lesson is amazing. Do you know I understood this contest more after reading yours. I agree with you using your brain makes the searching more interesting than using Apps.

Goody! I’m glad that the post could help.
Now we wait for the Big 80 to start. Hopefully our friend will have mercy on us and don’t make them too difficult so that we can use our brains to the fullest.
Thanks for the engagement 🌼

I also love words too, there are start of conversations as you said, I agree with that.
Anagrams do bring a lot of fun when trying to solve them, it is a game that will bring happiness if you are able to solve it, it helps develop your vocabulary and also increase your IQ just like the game " I spy with my little help", some are easy while some are way too hard😅, but there are of help to us.

Thank for telling us more about anagrams, especially breaking it down for us💓

The pleasure is all mine!
As for you loving word games... No wonder your English is so good my friend.
