As I told you in my previous post one week ago, the plan was to visit the Victoria Falls National Park the next day. We did just that. Getting close to such a mighty waterfall was quite an overwhelming feeling. It did get wet in some places, but we were prepared. We had brought raincoats with us. Two countries, Zimbabwe and Zambia, can both offer stunning views of the falls. When we walked along the trail on Zimbabwes side, we could look over to Zambia. A few days later we went to the Zambian side. You can see the steam from the falls more than 30 kilometers away. Because it can look like smoke, the falls have also been called "The Smoke that Thunders". We saw the spray from the air before we landed at the Victoria Falls airport. That is some 20 kilometers from the falls and the town of the same name. The Victoria Falls have been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 2007.

Map of the falls

The entrance is less than a couple of kilometers from the town Victoria Falls, so we were able to walk. After paying the ticket (50USD) we started to walk along the path close to the falls. There are several viewpoints along the way. In some places it was so wet that raincoats were necessary. My camera had to hide underneath. To walk along the path, from one viewpoint to the next, was a spectacular walk. The noice did sound like thunder and the spray did look like smoke.

The falls are located almost half way along the Zambezi River, which has a length of 2700 kilometers before reaching the sea. The river plunges into a 100 meter vertical gorge. The fall spans approximately 1700 meters in width. This is one an a half time wider than the Niagara Falls. This curtain of water makes is what makes Victoria Falls the widest fall in the world. In 1958 the highest flow of water was recorded. It reached more than 700.000 cubic meters a minute. This flow coursed the water in the gorge to rise 18 meters. The amount of water varies with the seasons. The peak with most water occur around April. Within a minute, some 625 million litres of water will flow over the edge. This huge amount causes a spray that can rise close to 1600 feet up into the air. No wonder it is visible from a long distance.

Devils Pool

Now we are at the end on the trail. From here we can look across the gorge where the border between the two countries are. This is also the place where we can look down into "Devils Pool".

Dr.David Livingstone became famous because of his travels in Africa. It was in 1855 that he, as the first European saw the falls. He named the falls after the British Queen Victoria.

Would be nice to reach the water fall Angel 😇 located in my country. Didn't you think in that possibility before?

Yes, I have been thinking of Angel. I am planing South America in 2025 - Ecuador and Colombia, so I am therefore also considering Venezuala as it is close :) I have been to Peru, Chile, Argentina and Uruquay before. Also been at Iguazu :)

Excellent itinerary friend.🙂 Perú due to Cusco or Machu Picchu, Argentina and amazing Patagonia ... Humongous places I might say.

Well feel welcome to my country when you happen to reach it. Any possibility to assist you, don't hesitate on doing it. I guess you've been hearing before that Venezuela isn't recommend at all by governments but really matters on counting with the proper measures of security and local people to help you. That's all.

I would love to visit South America again, including your country. I have heard that Venezuela is not recommended, but I think if one uses common sense and do some work in advance. Like checking out which areas that are not safe etc. :)

I don't know if you happen to use Instagram. Check the profile of @PatrickViaja. He's such a cool england guy that came here and literally went to every corner of the country, developing a great project to promote Venezuela 🇻🇪 to have a good visit.

It was a great experience! We also did activities like a sunset dinner cruise on the Zambezi River, daytrip safari to Chobe N.P. and Livingstone in Zambia. All can be recomended. Zimbabwe is more expensive than South Africa.

It is a pity what happened to Zimbabwe. It had the potential to be one of Africa's best countries. In fact, it was many moons ago.
Now the citizens flock to South Africa for work. It is so sad.
I am just so grateful that tourism continues to bring a flickering of hope.

Yes, I think so too. At least everyone who were in contact with tourist really did a great job. If they keep that up, I think tourism will provide a better income.
