TOLEDO, UNA CIUDAD PARA ENAMORARSE
El casco histórico de Toledo impresiona desde el primer momento en el que se le divisa desde la distancia por su emplazamiento natural, ya que se alza sobre el promontorio que contornea el gran meandro constituido por el río Tajo, el cual ciñe su cintura al rodear la ciudad de este a oeste, pasando por el sur. Una hermosa estampa que ha inspirado a fotógrafos y pintores de alta valía.
Otro regalo maravilloso que ofrece Toledo a la vista, es su conservada imagen de ciudad medieval que resguarda entre torreones y murallas, la más espectacular muestra de la historia del arte en España, un país que habiendo sufrido diversas invasiones a través de los tiempos, hoy acuna con primor la herencia cultural habida del transitar romano, visigodo, musulmán, judío y cristiano por sus paisajes. No en vano es conocida como la ciudad de las tres culturas, epíteto que le ha valido para ser declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO desde el año 1986.
Su entorno geográfico, sus valores paisaisticos, sus Cigarrales y sus Vegas, constituyen el entorno natural en el que encajan en perfecta armonía sus miradores, su maravillosa Puerta de Bisagra, sus puentes de San Martín y Alcántara, su espectacular catedral, su Cristo moreno, el Alcázar y tantos otros símbolos propios de la convivencia pacífica de judíos, musulmanes y cristianos hacen de esta ciudad una estancia propia para el romance, la poesía y la pasión. Un rincón del mundo para enamorarse, y yo me enamoré.
La historia ubica la primera mención de la ciudad de Toledo en el año 192 a.C, no obstante, recientes estudios arqueológicos han identificado en el cerro Bu, en el margen externo del río Tajo, restos de cabañas que sugieren la existencia de un poblado agrícola-ganadero que posiblemente data de la época de Bronce.
Toledo también guarda en sus anales de historia el haber sido la sede de 17 concilios entre los años 400 y 711 de nuestra era, además de haber acogido en su suelo durante el reinado de Alfonso X el Sabio, la Escuela de Traductores, foco de cultura y conocimiento que irradió a toda Europa durante los siglos XII y XIII, con lo que pasó a ser el corazón intelectual europeo. Las traducciones de textos árabes y judíos permitieron apropiarse de los conocimientos de la cultura musulmana y hebrea, de sus creencias y el redescubrimiento de la cultura clásica griega.
Las traducciones de textos árabes y judíos, al mismo tiempo que las traducciones de obras griegas, hicieron de Toledo el centro intelectual europeo. De estas obras traducidas, el resto de Europa podía adquirir conocimientos de la cultura musulmana y hebrea, sus creencias, y redescubrir las enseñanzas griegas clásicas.
En Toledo también resulta de gran aprecio su cultura gastronómica, basada especialmente en la caza y la carnicería, teniendo como coprotagonista por excelencia el aceite de oliva. Destaca el cochifrito que suele ser de cordero, las muy famosas carcamusas,( ternera o cerdo desmenuzado y guisado con tomate y guisantes. También son muy populares las sopas de ajo y la perdiz estofada que viene a ser la firma insigne de la cocina toledana.
Considero importante mencionar el postre que colocó la guinda a mi enamoramiento de Toledo, el mazapán toledano.
Otro de los aspectos que hace especial a esta ciudad, es su artesanía, donde dos artes ancestrales le dan renombre: el damasquinado y la espadería; aunque también destacan la cerámica, el forjado y la madera.
Desde su época visigoda el arte del acero en Toledo ha gozado de gran prestigio en todo el mundo, especialmente entre los siglos XVI y XVII, llegándose a creer que el Tajo guardaba bajo sus aguas el secreto para otorgar propiedades maravillosas a la hoja de las espadas.
Sin embargo de sus artesanías lo que yo más admiro es el arte del damasquinado, una herencia de origen árabe en la que Toledo destaca como el mayor foco de producción actual, cuya técnica consiste en hacer dibujos insertando hilos de oro o de plata sobre una base.
Definitivamente, Toledo es una ciudad para enamorarse.

Since Visigothic times, the art of steel in Toledo has enjoyed great prestige throughout the world, especially between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, coming to believe that the Tagus kept under its waters the secret to give wonderful properties to the blade of the swords.
