LANZAROTE | Landscape photography contest #134

The island of Lanzarote is the closest of the Canary Islands to the African continent, and is an autonomous community of Spain.

The island is of volcanic origin, as its orography is completely dotted with inactive volcanoes. The soil is black or very dark and farmers have had to work hard to make it bear fruit, and it is always under the influence of strong trade winds, which makes it difficult to grow trees.

Since time immemorial, farmers have had to manage the harshness of the land with the inconvenience of the wind, and here we find this almost lunar landscape, but completely covered with semicircles of black volcanic stone to protect their plantations of fig trees and vines, almost the only two trees capable of withstanding the conditions of this land. In the end, man has tamed the landscape and transformed it to meet his must, although in this particular case the transformation has been aesthetically interesting and integrated into the original landscape.

The image belongs to La Geria, a region that covers the entire south of the island and which is characterised by having preserved and still maintaining active those fields of fig trees and vineyards, surrounded by those stony protections, which are lost to infinity.
