RE: Newcomer Verification @pinkcastle: Software back-end development graduate from China

in WORLD OF XPILAR8 months ago (edited)

While we had discussion in WOX discord one of the suspicion raised by one of the Moderator who said that in photos of user there are Latin keyboard and that in his opinion was suspicion for the users not to be from China but from any other country.

I suspect those of us involved in that discussion thought that it was private. Which is why it's a private Discord channel.

How do you think other members of this community would feel if we shared details about what we investigate, how often we're suspicious and the discussions we have? Most of them will have no idea of the work we do behind the scenes which is why we do it behind the scenes... Especially when those suspicions are quickly dismissed (just as they were in this case).

A few others (myself and @nahela in particular) were in discussion with this user and as you've seen with nahela's reply, were reaching the same conclusion. Then pinkcastle could happily have been validated without the portrayal that there was a witchhunt going on behind the scenes and you being the hero who saved him.

Having mentioned the discussion, you could have also referred to the replies to that question instead of portraying us as a group of moderators chasing users off the platform with our pitchforks.

I looked into that post / user and the images on the monitor appeared to be Chinese. I hadn't noticed the keyboard!

From my short research, American layout keyboards are fairly standard in China these days. I've not spent much time looking into it though.

what kind of translator you can use in China

Was a fair question having shared this link with you - https://bestdiplomats.org/why-china-banned-google/

Some other bits that I'd like to comment on...

why then we make it so difficult for them to get started?

Apart from the fact that we found the introducing account to be a
plagiarist and liar?

Please, give a person a chance and learn him before blaming or blacklisting.

I remind you of @gracembabazi.

You didn't remember her (although she will remember you) and when I reminded you, you described this as "a nice post". As somebody who will happily tear an abuser a new one, even I thought that doing this to a user who had only been on the platform for a few weeks was harsh.

As you said...

We often get mislead by our stereotypes

Contrary to our African user, you're happy to wait and see what the Newcomers Community think of @zunqi1 despite the undisputed evidence. A user who has a very similar profile to @gracembabazi (in that she embarked upon an approach of mass-plagiarism) with the differences being that gracembabazi uploaded an introduction photo of herself (unlike zunqi's fake) and that she is from Uganda and not China.

As you pointed out in your post, she deceived a lot of people and you highlighted to each of them where they were deceived. Now that it has been pointed out that it is happening with @zunqi1, why are you waiting for a conversation on Discord when gracembabazi didn't get this opportunity?

Greetings friend @the-gorilla

I suspect those of us involved in that discussion thought that it was private. Which is why it's a private Discord channel.

I agree with you, everything we talk about in our Discord channel should be considered "private", since there we generate a series of observations that can trigger various points of view and actions, our function is to maintain order based on the behavior that each author, or each user submits, this is what will give you the reputation you deserve.

References are usually a key point in the presentation of a user, we must be alert when one or more users are referenced by a suspicious user. Maybe you shouldn't always judge someone right away, but the cases of fake profiles that were detected are very clear.

You do a decent job of cleaning the body which could not perform it itself. Personally, I never imagined it as 'chasing users off the platform with our pitchforks' :P

Thank you 👍🏼

Hi @the-gorilla, sorry for late reply but as I mentioned yesterday I am having my long night shifts these days and had some rest just woke up.

When I come across any user who is not known and who has posts that show zero in payout my first impression if that account is genuine, because if the blog has not been supported by others, I wonder if he was already verified by someone or not and if giving a support will be correct or not.

Many of us, who are here for a long time saw many different situation and also there are many small details that we pay attention to, that help us identify that. Still there are many new users who started not long ago and a part of some communities and may not have an experience, the same time they will not accept the users until they are verified.

Using the example of keyboard in this post my intention was to give a helpful hint for others who may come across such situation in future.

That is why I also shared en example from my real life with my colleague :

But also it was a discovery for me when Zhang explained how this kind of keyboard help easy writing converting the Latin keys into Chinese letters, which is also helpful to know for users who verify newcomers.

I did not have a feeling that this is something not appropriate to share as an example but if you feel so then I apologise for doing that and will not share anything accept my own thoughts in my future posts.
