The beauty of Münster: St. Lambert Church (Part2)
Hello dear Steemians,
Today I wanted to continue with the photo series about the main sightseeing place in Muenster but also it is one of my favorite places not only because of the beauty of the architecture but also because of the very special history.
St. LambertChurch is located on Prinzipalmarkt, the famous principle marketplace, in the style of late Gothic architecture. The distinct feature of this church is almost black cathedral with tall spire, clock and also three metal cages in the human height.
Münster was always very strong catholic city and in the 16th century during the rebellion known Anabaptists who were against christian rules. The names like Jan van Leiden, Bernd Knipperdollink and Bernd Knechting are very well known in Münster. They were Dutch citizen and followers of a new movement for End of Time and Christ’s Second arrival and Münster as a New Jerusalem.
Of course, all of that was not something that Church wanted to have therefore, that rebellion movement was destroyed and the three main leader were tortured and their bodies were placed into the three cages that were hang up on the Spire of the St. Lambert church.
Of course nowadays there are no skeletons and the cages are just a reminder of the history of Münster.
You can see the grandeur of architecture in your photographs. I am amazed at how many small details are made. And it's all done by hand without machines.
Yes, the people in the past were very skilled but I believe they loved what they were doing, unique work indeed!
Amazing architecture @stef1, incredible level of detail in the stonework. Whereas we have very large cathedrals in Denmark, they are nearly always just very "solid," impressive mostly by their size.
The cages are a bit gruesome, but that's history for us...
The church always loved to keep their "sheep" under control therefore, such display of their power is not really a surprise. I am glad that we do not live in that old time.
