#club5050 Poutine

Poutine? Don’t worry I will not be talking politics here.

But unless you are Canadian or have visited this stunning country you probably have no clue what poutine is.

It is a traditional Canadian hot meal. A little like the fish and chips here in the UK. It is something you probably don’t cook at home.

Yes, that’s me on holiday in Canada 🇨🇦

From what I have seen, poutine is what you get when you are out and about or partying. You could think of it like the kebab you order on your way home from the takeaway, which you nibble on because it is too late for much else. Luckily there is also a falafel shop near mine for such occasions.

Poutine is on the menu of pretty much every Canadian eatery in town. However especially if it is the first time you dare to try it I recommend you pop in a place that specialises in poutine and serves just that so you get the chance to try it at its best.

So here we are in Smoke’s Poutinerie in the popular wine region of Kelowna which features another massive lake surrounded by vineyards.

So what is poutine actually? Chips, lots of them, swimming in thick gravy with cheese curds and add-ons of your choice. As you can see from my photos I went for beef with mushrooms and peas.

So my poutine treat became more like a proper steak dinner in a fast food container to go. I got it piping hot and couldn’t finish the whole thing.

I also had a beer instead of red wine commonly paired with beef. Yes, Smoke’s Poutinerie has got a license and sells alcoholic drinks too.

Last but not least I can’t help myself but ask @brittilicious about her opinion on poutine? I personally liked it and I will certainly have it again! How often do you normally have it? Once a week?

If I ever get my food truck sorted (yes, I am still looking for a business partner!) and I start selling poutine to the English people here I reckon it will be a success!

Sort:

I didn't know this Quebecois dish. I think I now know where the Venezuelan papas mixtas come from, LOL. Maybe one of those Venezuelans, wandering around the world, came to Quebec and copied the idea. Either that or poutine is a meme yet to be categorized! I was reading Brittilicious's comment and I see that with the poutine the inevitable has happened, it has been versioned, simplified and popularized XD

As always, visiting your blog is a pleasure, @petface :)

Papas mixtas look very appetising! I think I now know their origin too @marlyncabrera You have lots of French heritage in Venezuela. Poutine and papas mixtas make a great budget hot food accessible to many.

Thanks for visiting my blog, it is always nice to hear from you. I am also glad to see that you keep being very active here on the platform.

Thank you ever so much @marlyncabrera 😍Congratulations on becoming a member of the lifestyle curation team here! 👏 I do appreciate that you devote your time to support the articles of other Steemians and encourage us to post more unique content. Cheers and see you around.

It's been a nice opportunity to get know the different posts in the platform. Unfortunately, I have found many good posts I haven't been able to curate because the user's CSI was under 5% or they were not actually at least in Club5050 although they were using the tag; these among other reasons.
This could be my last week anyway. I am glad I was able to curate one of your posts because your content is always so good. Producers of content like you should always get better rewards. Thanks for your kind words ❤️

I only eat it occasionally, but that is because it is not as available as one would hope. It is nice to see they have adopted it in BC though.

Poutine is a French dish, and not just Quebecois, but Acadian as well. There are regional differences in toppings, but your choice of beef and mushrooms is weird (to me!) haha! <3

The basic dish is chips with squeaky cheese curds and gravy. The cheese curds are the most important part. They have to be super squeaky. They are not squeaky unless they are fresh and to be fresh they need to be young curds made in Quebec.

So yes, it is possible to be a poutine snob.

In the maritime provinces, and Newfoundland and Labrador, there are a few different styles. The Newfoundlander type often has turkey dressing and mushy peas on top. That variety is pretty good.

I should have guessed the French origin by the spelling of poutine with the e in the end. I now wonder if it can be found in France too. I'm going there in September so I will keep an eye out. I certainly didn't know that the cheese curds are the most important element. I thought that maybe the gravy is the hero of the dish. I personally enjoyed the cheese curds, they tasted like Mozzarella to me. I would love to try poutine with turkey and mushy peas! Is there a seafood variety as well?

I don't think you will find it in France unless they have co-opted the dish over there. It is said the dish originated in Quebec in the 1950s.

The cheese curds are a white cheddar, which I think might be the last type of cheese found in a French dish. :-P

The one with turkey dressing isn't with the turkey meat, just the bread that was stuffed inside it.

I can't find quite the right picture of it but this is pretty close:

Turkey dressing and Turkey gravy seems always available in Newfoundland as they have a popular dish called Jiggs Dinner.

Jiggs dinner has everything. Turkey, dressing, potato, turnip, carrot, cabbage, corned beef, gravy, mustard pickles, and it must be seasoned with summer savoury.

The poutine would be left overs.

I have seen lobster poutine, but that would only be when there are so many lobsters around you need to think up new ways to eat it---or for tourists. :-D

Cheers!

The food looks so delicious, I would definitely taste it. Looking at the amount it should be enough to satisfy hungry people :)

Very well spotted @stef1 Food portions across Canada were very generous. I don’t remember even ordering a starter or a dessert as just a main course was more than enough.

This food looks divine, I did not know it. Just looking at the pictures makes me want to taste it. Thanks for sharing your opinion! nice afternoon
