WOX Travel Contest | Week 18 - A Trip to Dhofar region of the Sultanate
Salalah is the city in Oman and is more known as the Dhofar region. It is like a jewel in the Crown for Oman. It is the only city in Oman which has a proper rainy season and it is called the Khareef season, means the season of harvesting. The climate here is something very unusual for a Middle East region, where one thinks it's only Desert and dry lands. Oman has a long coast line of Arabian Sea which runs through the entire Country. When it rains the whole region becomes lush green and the sights are amazing. The season is from July to Sept, so this is the best time to travel to Salalah.
Being for around 7.5 years in this Country, twice I had an opportunity to visit Salalah. It's at a distance of 1000 Kms from Muscat, so it's not that nearby to travel often. I have always taken a flight to go there, but a lot of people prefer driving there because the views on the way are very beautiful. But 1000 Kms drive is too much for me, I cannot think of it.
The beautiful coastline, the lush green cliffs and the tropical climate all together make this place look magical. The good part is when it's extreme summer in Muscat, this place is totally opposite and has the best tropical climate, so it's a good short getaway for us within the Country itself.
One of the bordering countries of Oman is Yemen. This particular place we visited is close to the Yemen border and it is the highest point in Salalah. This road is called the Sarfait Road and it is around 1000 mtrs above sea level. The views here are breathtaking. The day we visited it was very foggy so we could not see it very clearly, but then that also had its own charm.
The place has railings but there is a small passage at one end from where you can go to the edge of one of the cliffs. I cannot express the feeling of being here. It feels so amazing standing on the edge with a whole vast open space in front of you.
This place is raw nature's beauty, there is nothing man made here. Everything is preserved here in its natural state and that's what I like the most about this place. While there are so many tourists visiting here, but any of these tourist places are not commercialized.
I like to venture out in these places
Look at this fog
This one is a very unique tree on one of the roads. This road is famous for the Anti-Gravity point. There is one stretch here where there is zero gravity. A Car in neutral gear will move by itself uphill in this stretch.
The best thing I like to do in this place is sit at the edge of these cliffs and enjoy the views and breathe in the fresh air.
The other unique thing to see in Salalah is the world's longest tomb.
You can just keep enjoying the views of this place in whichever part of the city you go

I didn't know there were such beautiful places here. Your photos are so amazing they make me want to visit Salalah immediately. Very beautiful views.
Oman is a stunning place full of natural beauty. It's a very small country on the map but worth visiting once in lifetime
