The World of XPILAR - CITYSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY AND ART CONTEST WEEK #159 - Ancient church

Today I am taking part in the World of XPILAR - CITYSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY AND ART CONTEST WEEK # 159 hosted by @axeman. For the contest, I chose a photo that I took on July 7, 2019, during a trip to Veliky Novgorod.

Veliky Novgorod is one of the oldest cities in Russia. Since ancient times, it has been divided by the Volkhov River into two parts - Sofia and Torgovaya. On the side of Sofia in the 11th century, a fortress was built, and on the other side of the Volkhov River there was Torg, that is, the city market. Later, the princely residence Yaroslav's Courtyard was built on the Trade Side. As a result, the Trade Side became the place of business and social life of the city.

Temples were also built here. They had not only ritual significance. Merchants kept the most valuable goods and even money in the cellars of stone churches. Such a dual purpose of churches is easy to explain - during the fire in the wooden city, only stone churches survived.

One of these temples was the Church of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, built in the second half of the 11th century. This is one of the oldest temples on the territory of the Russian Federation, but now this temple is inactive. It is part of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve, and is also included in the list of world heritage sites.
