Photographic processing is nothing more than the set of techniques that allow us to retouch or beautify an image, making use of some tools, commonly one or more digital applications, which allow us to manipulate at will the main parameters of a photo, among which stand out, contrast, brightness, lighting, shadows, saturation, warmth, sharpness, among many others.

In this opportunity, the fellow @bambuka from the World of Xpilar Community, asks all of us who wish to participate in this initiative to process a photograph of our own using our favorite effect or favorite post-processing algorithm.

I must confess that, as in previous occasions, this process represented for me a real photographic challenge, since I do not have an effect or an editing algorithm that I can claim to be my favorite, on the contrary, depending on the nature and characteristics of the image itself, I usually recreate in my mind the result I want to achieve; I usually recreate in my mind the result I want to achieve, and what could be the techniques (parameters and filters) that could be useful to achieve it, according to the tools I have in the free versions of the applications Picsart and Snapseed that I downloaded some time ago, in my smartphone Samsung Galaxy A12, which, although they have served me for my editing work, have some shortcomings with respect to the full versions or compared to other applications available for personal computers or laptops.

El procesamiento fotográfico no es más que el conjunto de técnicas que nos permiten retocar o embellecer una imagen, haciendo uso de algunas herramientas, comúnmente una o mas aplicaciones digitales, que nos permiten manipular a nuestro antojo los principales parámetros de una foto, entre los que destacan, contraste, brillo, iluminación, sombras, saturación, calidez, nitidez, entre muchos otros.

En esta oportunidad, el compañero @bambuka de la Comunidad World of Xpilar, nos solicita a todos los que deseamos participar en esta iniciativa, procesar una fotografía propia haciendo uso del efecto que consideramos como nuestro favorito o el algoritmo de posprocesamiento favorito.

Debo confesar que, al igual que las ocasiones anteriores, este proceso representó para mí un auténtico reto fotográfico, dado que no tengo un efecto o un algoritmo de edición que pueda afirmar que es mi favorito, por el contrario, dependiendo de la naturaleza y características propias de la imagen; suelo recrear en mi mente el resultado que deseo alcanzar, y cuales podrían ser las técnicas (parámetros y filtros) que podrían ser de utilidad para lograrlo, de acuerdo a las herramientas que dispongo en las versiones gratuitas de las aplicaciones Picsart y Snapseed que descargué hace algún tiempo, en mi teléfono inteligente Samsung Galaxy A12, los cuales, si bien me han servido para mis trabajos de edición, presentan algunas carencias con respecto a las versiones completas o frente a otras aplicaciones disponibles para computadoras personales o laptops.

I usually employ a set of common steps or processes in all my photo editing work, regardless of the characteristics of the image. First of all, I usually crop it with the Picsart application, looking to eliminate those elements that I consider, either, that are superfluous or that can divert the viewer's attention from my main objective, however, in the photo that I selected to participate this week, it was not necessary, it was enough to resize it.

Another procedure that I often use is to apply a High Dynamic Range (HDR) filter, trying to bring a little more light to the dark areas to better observe what is in them, and avoid that the parts that are quite illuminated, may look burned or totally white.

In this particular case, I used an effect called "Color Burst" (Estallido de Color), which allows me to remove some colors or shades of the image, while preserving the rest, as can be seen in the following image, where the sky and other elements acquire a grayish color.

Suelo emplear un conjunto de pasos o procesos comunes en todos mis trabajos de edición fotográfica, independientemente de las características de la imagen. En primer lugar, suelo recortarla con la aplicación Picsart, buscando eliminar aquellos elementos que considero, bien sea, que sobran o que pueden desviar la atención del espectador de mi objetivo principal, sin embargo, en la foto que seleccioné para participar esta semana, no fue necesario, solo bastó con redimensionarla.

Otro procedimiento que empleo con frecuencia, es aplicar un filtro del tipo High Dynamic Range (HDR), procurando aportar un poco más de luz a las zonas oscuras para observar mejor lo que hay en ellas, y evitar que las partes que se encuentran bastante iluminadas, puedan verse quemadas o totalmente blancas.

En este caso en particular, usé un efecto denominado "Estallido de Color", que me permite eliminar algunos colores o tonalidades de la imagen, mientras conserva el resto, como puede observarse en la siguiente imagen, donde el cielo y otros elementos adquieren un color grisáceo.

I then go to the Snapseed application, where I usually try the default effects available on the home screen, in order to see how the image is affected. Usually, this is a "trial and error" process, however, among my favorite filters stands out "Bright", which attenuates the image colors from the edges towards the center of the image. Unfortunately, unlike Picsart, this application does not allow the user to regulate or graduate the intensity of the effect, which is allowed in other editing tools it offers, so sometimes it is necessary to modify certain parameters or values using another tool.

Then I adjust the level of sharpness of the image I obtained, and if necessary, I modify illumination, brightness, saturation or contrast.

Posteriormente me dirijo a la aplicación Snapseed, donde suelo probar los efectos predeterminados disponibles en la pantalla de inicio, con la finalidad de observar como se ve afectada la imagen. Usualmente, este es un proceso de "ensayo y error", sin embargo, entre mis filtros favoritos destaca "Bright", el cual atenúa los colores de la imagen desde los extremos hacia el centro de la misma. Lamentablemente, a diferencia de Picsart, esta aplicación no permite al usuario regular o graduar la intensidad del efecto, lo que si permite en otras herramientas de edición que ofrece, por lo que en ocasiones, es necesario modificar ciertos parámetros o valores haciendo de otra herramienta.

Luego ajusto el nivel de nitidez de la imagen que obtuve, y de ser necesario, modifico iluminación, brillo, saturación o contraste.

Finally, I get the following image, where the set of buildings seem to be isolated from the surrounding environment, as if they were on a remote island, as if the avenue located in the foreground, had no beginning or end, or at least, that is the feeling that as a viewer I get from the photo.

For me it would be really valuable to know from the participants of this weekly initiative, if the image produces some sensation or not, if it tells some story or not, that is to say, if with this processing work I managed to communicate something to them.

Finalmente, obtengo la siguiente imagen, donde el conjunto de edificaciones parecen estar aisladas del entorno que las circunda, como si se encontrasen en una isla remota, como si la avenida ubicada en un primer plano, no tuviese principio o fin, o al menos, esa es la sensación que como espectador me produce la foto.

Para mí sería realmente valioso conocer de los participantes de esta iniciativa semanal, si la imagen les produce alguna sensación o no, si relata alguna historia o no, es decir, si con este trabajo de procesamiento les logré comunicar algo.
