In photography, medium tones usually predominate because we try to achieve a balance in the colors present in the image. However, for multiple and varied reasons, we wish to create a special atmosphere in our photographic work, where high or light tones predominate, or on the contrary, low or dark tones.

High Key photography is a technique that is characterized by the following elements:

• An increase in whites.

• An almost total suppression of dark colors and shadows.

• The highlights are the dominant tone (whites and all those close to this color).

• There are no pure blacks, only soft grays.

Normally, this effect is achieved by overexposing the subject (model or object) trying to reduce the contrast, for which, the light sources used are increased.

In this opportunity, the fellow @bambuka from the World of Xpilar Community, we ask all of us who wish to participate in this initiative to process a photograph of our own using the High Key technique, which can be a fresh image or an old one.

However, as I live in a country located in the tropics, where the presence of snowfall is only possible at high altitudes, which are only found on the peaks of the Andes Mountains, and also, there are not enough white or clear elements in my city, I chose a photograph I took a few years ago in the historic center of Puerto Cabello, a port city located on the shores of the Caribbean Sea, which has whitewashed walls in their homes, many of which date from the time when we were part of the Spanish Empire, before becoming an independent nation in the early nineteenth century.

I must confess that, as on previous occasions, this process represented for me a real photographic challenge that leaves me a great learning experience, and in which I hope to live up to what was requested.

Finally, as I explained in previous posts, I use the editing tools provided by the free versions of the Picsart and Snapseed applications that I downloaded some time ago, on my Samsung Galaxy A12 smartphone, which, although they have served me well for my editing work, they present some shortcomings compared to the full versions or to other applications available for personal computers or laptops.

En la fotografía, usualmente predominan los tonos medios por cuanto procuramos un equilibrio en los colores presentes en la imagen. Sin embargo, por múltiples y variadas razones, deseamos crear un ambiente especial en nuestro trabajo fotográfico, donde predominen los tonos altos o claros, o por el contrario, los tonos bajos u oscuros.

La fotografía de tonos altos o High Key, es una técnica que se caracteriza por los siguientes elementos:

• Un incremento de los blancos.

• Una supressión casi total de los colores oscuros y las sombras.

• Las altas luces son el tono dominante (blancos y todos los cercanos a este color).

• No existen negros puros, solo grises suaves.

Normalmente, este efecto se logra al sobreexponer al sujeto (modelo u objeto) intentando reducir el contraste, para lo cual, se incrementan las fuentes de luz empleadas.

En esta oportunidad, el compañero @bambuka de la Comunidad World of Xpilar nos solicita a todos los que deseamos participar en esta iniciativa, procesar una fotografía propia mediante la técnica de tonos altos o High Key, pudiendo ser una imagen fresca o de antigua data.

Sin embargo, como vivo en un país situado en el trópico, donde la presencia de nevadas solo son posibles a grandes alturas, las cuales solo se encuentran en las cimas de la Cordillera de los Andes, y además, no hay elementos lo suficientemente blancos o claros en mi ciudad, escogí una fotografía que tomé unos años atrás en el casco histórico de Puerto Cabello, una ciudad portuaria ubicada a orillas del Mar Caribe, que cuenta con paredes encaladas en sus viviendas, muchas de las cuales datan de la época en que formábamos parte del Imperio Español, antes de independizarnos a principios del Siglo XIX.

Debo confesar que, al igual que las ocasiones anteriores, este proceso representó para mí un auténtico reto fotográfico que me deja un gran aprendizaje, y en el que espero estar a la altura de lo solicitado.

Finalmente, como expliqué en los posts anteriores, utilizo las herramientas de edición que me brindan las versiones gratuitas de las aplicaciones Picsart y Snapseed que descargué hace algún tiempo, en mi Samsung Galaxy A12 teléfono inteligente, los cuales, si bien me han servido para mis trabajos de edición, presentan algunas carencias con respecto a las versiones completas o frente a otras aplicaciones disponibles para computadoras personales o laptops.

First, I crop the image with the Picsart application, eliminating the ornamental elements and the roof located at the top of the photograph, and I try to highlight the human figure with a horizontal format in 4:3 ratio, to finally resize the image to 1280 x 960, the measures I usually use in my posts, before lightly applying a High Dynamic Range (HDR) filter.

Then I go to Snapseed, where I explore the available filters, looking for one that provides more light to the silhouette of the person, before modifying the values of sharpness, structure, light, shadow, brightness and contrast, to see what result I obtain.

En primer lugar, recorto la imagen con la aplicación Picsart, eliminando los elementos ornamentales y el tejado ubicados en la parte superior de la fotografía, y procuro destacar la figura humana con un formato horizontal en proporción 4:3, para finalmente redimensionar la imagen a 1280 x 960, las medidas que usualmente empleo en mis posts, antes de aplicar ligeramente un filtro del tipo High Dynamic Range (HDR).

Luego me dirijo a Snapseed, donde exploro los filtros disponibles, buscando alguno que le proporcione mayor luz a la silueta de la persona, antes de modificar los valores de nitidez, estructura, luz, sombra, brillo y contraste, para ver que resultado obtengo

At this point in the process, I obtain an image where there is an almost absolute predominance of white, with the exception of the model, a wooden window with iron bars belonging to the building located in the background, and the blue skirting board located at the lower end of the house in the foreground.

En este punto del proceso, obtengo una imagen donde existe un predominio casi absoluto del blanco, con la excepción de la modelo, una ventana de madera con rejas de hierro perteneciente a la edificación ubicada al fondo, y el rodapié de color azul situado en el extremo inferior de la vivienda que está en primer plano.

I hide the window, cloning a white rectangular section of the wall on the right, and superimpose it in its place to eliminate it, obtaining an image where the presence of the angles that form the walls and other structural or ornamental elements present in the original photograph is barely perceptible, except for the blue baseboard located in the lower right corner, trying to give all the prominence to the model.

Oculto la ventana, clonando una sección rectangular de color blanco de la pared situada a la derecha, y la superpongo en su lugar para eliminarla, obteniendo una imagen donde apenas es perceptible la presencia de los ángulos que forman las paredes y otros elementos estructurales u ornamentales presentes en la fotografía original, salvo por el rodapié de color azul ubicado en el extremo inferior derecho, procurando darle todo el protagonismo a la modelo.

Finally, at this point in the editing process, it is impossible to continue without severely affecting the resolution and quality of the image, so I decide to terminate it.

Finalmente, en este punto del proceso de edición, es imposible continuar adelante sin afectar severamente la resolución y calidad de la imagen, por lo decido darlo por concluído.
