Dark photography, also known as dark mood, is a technique that basically consists of darkening an image in order to achieve a dark or gloomy result.

It has many similarities with the photography in low key, however, here what is sought is to convey a dark mood, gloomy, almost dark.

This technique is usually applied mainly in gastronomic photography (dark food) with the aim of highlighting food, in product photography and in portraits of people or pets, where the emotions of the photographed subjects or models must be in accordance with the objective to be transmitted to the viewer, such as the feeling of sadness or nostalgia.

For this new initiative by @bambuka from the World of Xpilar Community, all participants are asked to take or choose a photo of their own and process it according to the suggested theme, in this case dark, or choose another photographic genre and justify the reasons for their selection.

In this sense, I opted for the originally suggested theme, however, the food photographs I have taken do not meet the parameters of the dark mood technique, in addition, I do not have materials that can provide me with a sufficiently dark background and I do not have at my disposal lighting devices that can offer me a direct light source, so I would have to make use of natural light, which I cannot manipulate at my convenience.

On the other hand, in the portraits of people or pets that I have in my personal archive, sadness is not the predominant emotion, so I had to discard them because they did not serve my purpose.

Finally I opted for photographs of old buildings that when processed, I could obtain a somber, gloomy atmosphere, as if it were a horror movie.

After several unsuccessful attempts, I chose a photograph I took of the Municipal Theater of Puerto Cabello, a building with a neoclassical architecture typical of the late nineteenth century that is located in the historic center of this Venezuelan port city that is located on the shores of the Caribbean Sea, and that in the distant past was the victim of attacks and looting by pirates and English, French and Dutch corsairs.

La fotografía dark también conocida como dark mood, es una técnica que consiste básicamente en oscurecer una imagen con la finalidad de lograr un resultado sombrío o tenebroso.

Posee muchas similitudes con la fotografía en clave baja, sin embargo, aquí lo que se busca es transmitir un estado de ánimo oscuro, lúgubre, casi tenebroso.

Se suele aplicar esta técnica principalmente en la fotografía gastronómica (dark food) con el objetivo de destacar los alimentos, en la fotografía de productos y en los retratos de personas o mascotas, donde las emociones de los sujetos o modelos fotografiados deben ser acordes al objetivo que se busca transmitir al espectador, como puede ser la sensación de tristeza o nostalgia.

Para esta nueva iniciativa del compañero @bambuka de la Comunidad World of Xpilar, se nos solicita a todos los participantes, realizar o escoger una foto propia y procesarla acorde al tema sugerido, en este caso dark, o bien escoger otro género fotográfico y justicar las razones para su selección.

En este sentido, opté por el tema originalmente sugerido, sin embargo, las fotografías de alimento que he realizado no cumplen con los parámetros propios de la técnica dark mood, además, no poseo materiales que puedan proporcionarme un fondo lo suficientemente oscuro y tampoco tengo a mi disposición dispositivos de iluminación que puedan ofrecerme una fuente de luz directa, por lo que tendría que hacer uso de la luz natural, la cual no puedo manipular a mi conveniencia.

Por otra parte, en los retratos de personas o mascotas que poseo en mi archivo personal, la tristeza no es la emoción predominante, por lo que tuve que descartarlas porque no servían para mi propósito.

Finalmente opté por fotografías de edificaciones antiguas que al procesarlas, pudiera obtener un ambiente sombrío, lúgubre, como si se tratase de una película de terror.

Luego de varios intentos fallidos, escogí una fotografía que realicé del Teatro Municipal de Puerto Cabello, una edificación que cuenta con una arquitectura neoclásica propia de finales del Siglo XIX que se encuentra ubicada en el casco histórico de esta ciudad portuaria venezolana que está situada a orillas del Mar Caribe, y que en el pasado distante fué víctima de ataques y saqueos por parte de piratas y corsarios ingleses, franceses y neerlandeses.

First, I entered the Picsart application where I resized the photo in order to adjust its size for publication on this platform. Subsequently, I adjusted the verticality, removed the lights located on the far left, and replaced the sky with a black background.

Then, with the Snapseed application, I darkened the ends of the photo, decreasing its brightness and illumination, with the intention of doing the opposite in the central part, so that it would give the impression that I had placed a light source in that direction.

Finally, before finishing the work, I tried to correct those errors or details that arose during the editing process.

En primer lugar, ingresé a la aplicación Picsart donde redimensioné la foto con el fin de ajustar su tamaño para su publicación en esta plataforma. Posteriormente, ajusté la vericalidad, suprimí las luminarias ubicadas en el extremo izquierdo, y sustituí el cielo por un fondo negro.

Luego, con la aplicación Snapseed, oscurecí los extremos de la foto, disminuyendo su brillo e iluminación, con la intención de mientras realizaba lo contrario en la parte central, de manera que diese la impresión que había ubicado una fuente de luz en esa dirección.

Finalmente, antes de dar por concluido el trabajo, procuré corregir aquellos errores o detalles que surgieron durante el proceso de edición.

Personally, I was very pleased with this week's assignment. On the other hand, the whole photo processing was a challenge for me, for all the reasons explained above.

Finally, I don't know for sure if the result I obtained meets all the requirements of the dark mood technique, or rather, if it could be qualified as low key, or even, if it corresponds to a hybrid of both genres. In any case, although perhaps the image is not as creepy or frightening as I would have wished, nevertheless, I would try not to circulate there at night, not because I fear being a victim of ghosts, vampires or werewolves, but of common criminals who hide in the dark to rob unsuspecting pedestrians of their personal belongings.

En lo personal, me agradó muchísimo la asignación de esta semana. Por otra parte, todo el procesamiento de la foto representó para mí un reto, por todas las razones explicadas anteriormente.

Finalmente, no sé a ciencia cierta si el resultado que obtuve cumple con todos los requisitos propios de la técnica dark mood, o más bien, podría ser calificado como clave baja, o incluso, si corresponde a un híbrido de ambos géneros. En cualquier caso, aunque tal vez la imagen no sea tan espeluznante o aterradora como hubiese deseado, sin embargo, procuraría no circular por allí en horas de la noche, no porque tema ser víctima de fantasmas, vampiros u hombre lobos, sinó de vulgares delincuentes que se esconden en la oscuridad para despojar a desprevenidos peatones de sus pertenencias personales.
