Low Key is a photographic or editing technique, where shadows or dark tones predominate, and in which the light is fundamentally focused in one point or direction.

This technique is commonly used to obtain images that offer a dramatic, reflective or nostalgic look, as opposed to the technique called High Key, where light tones and strong lighting predominate in the photographs.

For this new initiative by @bambuka from the World of Xpilar Community, all participants are asked to choose a photo of their own, and edit it using this technique described above, to obtain a radically different image

In this sense, I chose a selfie I took one night when I took advantage of a local power failure to experiment with high contrast photography, for which I used the flashlight of my smartphone to illuminate half of my face, while the other half remained in the dark, for which I had my Nikon Coolpix S6800 digital camera to take the frontal shots of my face.

Low Key es una técnica fotográfica o de edición, donde predominan las sombras o tonos oscuros, y en la que la luz está fundamentalmente focalizada en un punto o dirección.

Esta técnica se emplea comúnmente para obtener imágenes que ofrecen un aspecto dramático, reflexivo o nostálgico, a diferencia de la técnica denominada High Key, donde predominan los tonos claros y una fuerte iluminación en las fotografías.

Para esta nueva iniciativa del compañero @bambuka de la Comunidad World of Xpilar, se nos solicita a todos los participantes, escoger una foto propia, y editarla haciendo uso de esta técnica descrita anteriormente, para obtener una imagen radicalmente diferente.

En este sentido, escogí una selfie que realizara una noche en la que aproveché una falla local en el servicio eléctrico para experimentar con fotografía de alto contraste, para lo cual, usé la linterna de mi teléfono inteligente para iluminar la mitad de mi rostro, mientras la otra mitad permanecía a oscuras, para lo cual conté con mi cámara digital Nikon Coolpix S6800 para efectuar las tomas frontales de mi cara.

With the previous photo, I simply made adjustments to the lighting, contrast, brightness and shadows parameters, and processed it in black and white, to obtain the following result

Although the resulting photo certainly meets all the characteristics of the High Key technique, and therefore, satisfies what was requested in the assignment, I decided to challenge myself and choose another photograph to process, and in this way test the knowledge and skills acquired in the 14 previous challenges or assignments; so I selected a not so recent photograph of the face of the youngest of my nieces, and see how successful I could be in processing it.

Aunque ciertamente la foto resultante cumple con todas las características de la técnica High Key, y por lo tanto, satisface lo solicitado en la asignación, decidí desafiarme a mí mismo y escoger otra fotografía para procesarla, y de esta forma poner a prueba los conocimientos y las habilidades adquiridas en los 14 desafíos o asignaciones anteriores; por lo que seleccioné una fotografía no tan reciente del rostro de la menor de mis sobrinas, y ver que tan exitoso podía resultar su procesamiento.

In this opportunity, I cropped the image to give more prominence to my niece's face, and then, as I did with the previous photograph, I processed it by modifying the values of the lighting, contrast, shadows and brightness parameters.

En esta oportunidad, recorté la imagen para dar mayor prominencia al rostro de mi sobrina, y posteriormente, al igual que hice con la fotografía anterior, la procesé modificando los valores de los parámetros de iluminación, contraste, sombras y brillo.

Finally, I obtained an image where the main source of light is directed almost exclusively to the face, while the contrasts and low lighting in the clothing and background of the photograph are notorious, obtaining a result, in my opinion, quite satisfactory given the editing tools I have: the Picsart and Snapseed applications that I have on my smartphone (Samsung Galaxy A12), and with which I am familiar.

Finalmente, obtuve una imagen donde la principal fuente de luz se dirige en forma casi exclusiva al rostro, mientras los contrastes y la escasa iluminación en la vestimenta y el fondo de la fotografía son notorios, obteniendo un resultado, a mi parecer, bastante satisfactorio dado las herramientas de edición con las que cuento: las aplicaciones Picsart y Snapseed que poseo en mi Smartphone (Samsung Galaxy A12), y que son con las que me encuentro familiarizado.
