Throughout art history, the depiction of human hands has evolved along with cultural changes, artistic styles, and the exploration of symbolism and expression that allows us to convey meaning and emotion.
From the representation of the hands through drawing, painting or sculpture we can infer the sex, race, age, status, or profession of a person. Also with our hands, we express emotions or feelings that artists manage to capture in their works.
Drawing or painting hands is as difficult as it is fascinating, so I have compiled a sample of the different stages in history and in different cultures to show you as an example and inspiration.

La representación de las manos humanas es, posiblemente la manifestación artística más antigua de nuestra historia y aun sigue siendo un tema fascinante para los artistas.
A lo largo de la historia del arte, la representación de manos humanas ha evolucionado junto con los cambios culturales, los estilos artísticos y la exploración del simbolismo y la expresión que nos permite transmitir significados y emociónes.
De la representación de las manos a través del dibujo, la pintura o la escultura podemos inferir el sexo, la raza, la edad, el status, o la profesión de una persona. Además con las manos expresamos emociones o sentimientos que los artistas logran plasmar en sus obras.
Dibujar o pintar las manos es tan difícil como fascinante por lo que he recopilado una muestra de las distintas etapas en la historia y en distintas culturas para mostrarselas a ustedes a modo de ejemplo e inspiración.

Cueva de las Manos (Cave of the Hands) is a cave complex with an abundance of very old rock art located in the Santa Cruz province of Argentina. It is named after the hundreds of hand paintings stencilled into collages on the rock walls.
The oldest art in the cave complex has been dated to 11,000 – 7,000 years BCE, making it the oldest known cave paintings in all of South America. The dating is based on the remains of bone pipes used for spraying the paint over hands to create stencilled artwork.
These are probably the most famous hands painting in Western culture, by Michelangelo Buonarroti in the Sistine Chapel.

Hands are fascinating, because of so many functions of each joint and fingers. There are indeed so many drawings and paintings of hands we can see in Art and that we love to try ourselves once in our life too.
