The «Citadel of the Women» in Cambodia (100% Power Up / #steemexclusive / 13 photos)

The Khmers of ancient Cambodia were true masters of art. To visit some of the temples with carved patterns and figures in stone is a highlight on a trip to this country. I have been here two times allready. The whole Angkor archiological complex contains so many temples that I would need to spend a couple of weeks in Siem Reap (nearest town) if I was to see all of them. Each of visits has included the main temples as Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Preah Khan and Banteay Srei – Citadel of the Women. This small temple is one of my favorites.

The Angkor kingdom was one of the most powerful in Indochina in the period from the 9th to the 13th. Century. Angkor was the capital and the heart of the Khmer empire. It is estimated that more than a million people once lived in Angkor

Banteay Srei is situated about 20 kilometers from Siem Reap. It's the only temple located so far away from the other temples, but it's worth visiting. The whole complex was completed around 960s and seems well preserved. This sandstone complex has a warm, pink hues that changes with the light. Best time is the soft afternoon light.

The temple has lots of carvings in stone. Intricate paterns, guardians in stone who are supposed to look after the temple. On some corners there are the three headed «nagas» (snakes). This is Khemer art at its best. The whole complex is surrounded by lush forests and ponds with lotus flowers. A beautiful place.
