All these photos were taken during many visits to Mauritius. The capital of the island, Port Louis, is heavy populated and the center of commerce. It's always busy on week days. I allways stay in a small town further north. But I often take the half an hour bus ride to the capital. The inner city still has many of the old houses and old style shops. I often take photos of these houses, details of windows or doors. One day they will eventually be replaced by modern houses.

This window above is found in Aapravasi Ghat which a historical site on the UNESCO World Heritage site. After the abolition of slavery in 1935, the British had to find other ways to find labourers to work on the sugar plantations. That made Mauritius the site of the first large scale use of indentured labour. The historical significanse of Aapravasi Ghat has to do with the place functioned as an immigration depot for these indentured labourers who arrived from different places in world. Now it's a museum telling the story of the immigrants.

If you visit Mauritius, don miss the colorful, chaotic and busy city of Port Louis. It's a city that still as an atmosphere that doesn't seem to have changed the for decades. Chinatown still has traditional shops and pharmacies with spices, dried insects etc. The city has an area where you will find the Muslim inhabitans and also a part that make you feel as if you are in India. A world in miniature.
