Akershus Fortress is situated in Oslo, the capital of Norway. It was built as a royal castle during the Middle Ages. This 700 year old castle has had an important place in Norweagian history. Built as a medieval castle it has survived many sieges, but never captured by any foreign army. The military activity was closed down for good from 1850 -1900. The fortress is open to the public during the day and you can go on a guided tour.

This fortress is said to have a lot of ghostly activities still going on. Whisperings and screams have been heard at night. A lot of people has been imprisoned and even executed in the fortress. It was the most severe prison we had in Norway in the 19th century. It's not hard to imagine stories of screams and the rattling of chains when you are here at night, like I was.

There was undoubtedly a ghostly atmosphere present as I walked around the corridors with a friend. We were here two hours before midnight during an anual event in Oslo called Oslo Culture Night. It is Norway's largest one-day festival and with events throughout the city. It is an annual event that provides a good opportunity to get to know the cultural life in Oslo. Much of what is usually closed to the public is open until midnight and everything can be visited for free.
