WOX TRAVEL CONTEST | Amsterdam

We traveled to Amsterdam by train. The views were extremely beautiful and we can honestly say that it is worth going around the whole of Holland.

As soon as we arrived in Amsterdam, we knew it was going to be one of the most beautiful places we've ever been. Wheels were flying everywhere, and the buildings were from beautiful to more beautiful. An almost cartoon-like feel.

We have all heard stories about Amsterdam and the way of life there. We had a built up idea from all the stories and had different expectations for our experience there. Today I will dispel all the myths and share with you everything as I saw it.

I imagined that all the people were on drugs and we would have to jump over some fainted people on the street... The truth is that even if there were some people who were high, it certainly didn't look like it. Everything is neat and clean and definitely the drunk people stay in the coffee shops and don't disturb the others.

I definitely didn't see a single homeless person. In most major European cities one is sure to see at least one, but in Amsterdam there are none. Then I read that the Dutch have a pretty good social system, and begging is also forbidden.

If you haven't seen a street vacuum cleaner, you will definitely come across one in Amsterdam. All day the streets are cleaned and even early in the morning it is perfectly clean.

Locals don't go to the central historic part where the flea shops can be found. The Dutch prefer to relax in the quieter parts of the city and certainly do not consider marijuana to be something interesting.

You have to watch out for cyclists because they drive fast and dangerously.
I agree with that, but the pedestrians are more to blame. There are great bike lanes everywhere and all you have to do is not ride them. Cyclists ride on the road and it's not as scary as everyone describes.

Everywhere you can find small quick restaurants for the traditional marinated herring on bread.
Well, from our stays and quite a bit of walking around, we can definitely say that we found only two such places. Once you find such a place, be sure to stop and try this traditional meal. It consists of herring, bread, onion and pickle. It's probably not something you've ever tried (if you like fish), but it's very tasty and not expensive.

Not many food choices in Amsterdam?

This is the most ridiculous statement. If you are not a fan of fish and seafood, you can certainly find many good foreign restaurants. We tried a Mexican-Argentine restaurant that was really, really good. Amsterdam is a place where you can find all kinds of restaurants and fast food, which you won't be able to find in many places in Europe.

Dutch waffles are nothing special. Can you find them in every country?

We can certainly find similar waffles here. But the secret is to try freshly baked waffles that are spread in front of you with cream and covered in chocolate. We tried these at van Wonderen Stroopwafels. Although we waited about 30 minutes, it was definitely worth it. The waffles were so delicious that they changed our perception of Dutch sweets in general.

Dutch Gouda is nothing special?

This can easily be decided whether it is so or not. In Amsterdam you can find cheese shops in many places where you can try different types for free.

Hopefully, we've managed to dispel at least a small part of the myths you might hear about Amsterdam. This city is one of those places that everyone should visit at least once in their life.

We promised ourselves that we will return there again, but this time we will also visit other Dutch cities, because every corner of this country is worth visiting.
