Hello Friends!

Today I thought of sharing a bit of information on our largest export industry - Sri Lankan textiles and apparel industry.

The Sri Lankan apparel industry plays a huge role in the country's economy. It is one of the largest manufacturing sectors in Sri Lanka. We Sri Lankans manufacture apparels and textiles proudly under the branding “Made in Sri Lanka”.

Over one million people are directly or indirectly employed in this industry. There are about 300-350 apparel manufacturers all over the island.

Textiles and apparels are the biggest export of Sri Lanka. Prior to Covid-19 pandemic impact the industry earned $ 5.3 billion from apparel exports. The apparel industry was growing rapidly but unfortunately apparel exports for the entirety of 2020 are likely to be $ 2 billion lower than last year.

Apparel sector in srilanka has a long history running back to nearly three decades. Sri Lankans strong commitment and ethical practices towards the welfare of its employees has brought the industry on its path of success.

Many world famous clothing brands are made and exported from Sri Lanka. These garments are exported around the world and sold under highly reputed global brands such as Victoria’s Secret, Nike, Levi’s, Liz Claiborne, Tesco, Ann Taylor,Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger,Mark and Spencer, etc.

There are about ten export processing zones in Sri Lanka. There is high demand for apparels made in Sri lanka from countries like EU and the UK. We also ship to countries like Germany, Italy, Australia, Belgium,Canada and the Netherlands. These countries are our prominent buyers.

Sri Lankan Apparel industry follows a highly sustainable manufacturing process during the factory to store journey. Apparel manufacturers in Sri Lanka are dedicated to ethical business and manufacturing practices which allows Sri Lankan garments to be held up as, “Garments without guilt”.

However, the Sri Lankan apparel industry is free of discrimination. It's a major income to Sri Lankan women which allows them to further invest their income, for their well being.

Sri Lanka has laws against child labour. Sri Lankan apparel factories do not recruit child labours who are under the age of eighteen. According to Sri Lankan law, any individual under the age fourteen years cannot be employed. Any individual who is under the age of 18 cannot be subjected to night duty. These labour laws are strictly followed in the Sri Lan apparel industry.

In terms of the global challenge, Sri Lanka proudly owns the world’s first custom-built Green apparel factory and Asia’s first carbon-neutral certified factory. It also owns the title of the world’s first manufacturing factories to receive “Net-zero carbon” status.

Sri Lankan apparel manufacturing owners took proactive measures to impose strict controls to reduce the spread of COVID-19 with aggressive contact tracing. Just as Sri Lanka did before, we will rise up through this situation soon and resume work as usual.

The future of the Sri Lankan apparel industry is bright as it already possesses a lot of strengths which will tend to grow more with time!

Thanks to @girolamomarotta for giving a chance to Sri Lanka in this wondeful contest.

Hope you enjoyed reading... Have a great day!!
