Dear friends, lovers of Italian football,
we are approaching the end of the first half of the 2020/21 edition of the Italian championship, which will go down in history as the second played in the midst of the emergency linked to the spread of covid-19, with stadiums first closed, then partially reopened and finally closed again, with a prospect for the spring that does not promise anything good.
In this general chaos, it is easy to understand how the shuffling of cards is the order of the day: teams that suddenly have to give up some of their players because they have tested positive for the virus, others that are forced to field even youth team players, and still others (actually only one) that decide not to play in away games because they are blocked by the local health authorities following the discovery of some positives in the group.
In the past we have often spoken of distorted championships, but this, however it ends up, will leave room for recriminations by many, both on the decisions of sporting justice and on bad luck, perhaps guilty of excluding important players before crucial challenges. In any case, the ball keeps rolling and with it the leadership of Milan is galloping, who liquidated the derelict Torino with a clear 2-0, obtained in the first half thanks to the goals of Leao and to the rather generous penalty (for a foul committed by Belotti, who for a sort of law of opposites was for once on the other side of the diver) converted by Kessie.
To the Rossoneri, who up to now cannot certainly complain about an adverse fate, the calendar has reserved in the worst moment of the season, the one following the first defeat of the season suffered against the usual rivals of the Juventus, perhaps the weakest opponent of the championship. A further false step could have undermined all the certainties accumulated in this first part of the season, but we have to recognize to Pioli to have transformed a group, considered at the eve of the championship able to fight for the fourth place, in a bloodthirsty machine.
Despite the three points that separate it from its cousins, Inter continues to remain, in the bookmakers' choices (and in my personal ones), the absolute favourite to win the title. In the big match at the Olimpico against Roma, the two teams, as has often happened in the past, ended the match in a draw, evenly sharing the periods of domination of the game.
Both showed strengths and weaknesses: the fast and technical football, especially on the counter-attack, of Roma has to face evident defensive uncertainties, which make the Giallorossi's rearguard one of the most beaten of the championship, while the Inter combines the quality of the single players and the depth of the squad with a not optimal physical condition and above all Handanovic particularly down in form. The two goals conceded by the Nerazzurri captain are the mirror of the difficulties that the Slovenian goalkeeper is going through at the moment, on whom weighs heavy responsibilities in the missed victory of his team.
Juventus tamed a stubborn Sassuolo 3-1, reduced to ten for the expulsion at the end of the first half of Pedro Obiang, and thus regain the fourth place, which had lost in favour of Atalanta in the afternoon, taking just one point from Roma third, but with a game less. The result, however, should not deceive, because for the Bianconeri, perhaps mentally exhausted after the victory three days earlier at San Siro, it was one of the least convincing performances of the season.
Sassuolo has long held the ball even in a numerical inferiority, evading the tired Bianconeri pressing with quick exchanges and sudden restarts; Bonucci, this time paired with Demiral, continues to show heavy limits not only when he is targeted at speed by younger and faster forwards, but also in marking, and Defrel's goal is the classic example of what just described. For the team of Pirlo the feeling remains that there is a great possibility of growth, but perhaps a lot also depends on the rapid recovery of Giorgio Chiellini, in a defense that remains the least perforated of the Serie A.
Good also Atalanta, victorious in ease in a field where many have struggled (if not even failed) such as that of Benevento, a little less Napoli, which despite winning in Udine with one of the rare goals of Bakayoko at the end of the match, has continued to show that feeling of improvisation that often comes from the team's gameplay, perhaps due to the sometimes unclear ideas of its coach.
The trend of the two teams, now paired in the standings in fifth place, however, appears opposite: launched towards the moon the team from Bergamo, stationary, with negative outlook the Neapolitans: I'm ready to predict right now Atalanta in the first four positions at the end of the championship and Napoli forced to occupy a place from fifth down, because the statistics show that when you lose so many games (just under a third of those played) you can hardly get a positive sign for the future.
In the lower part of the standings, important victories for Fiorentina, that manages to beat Cagliari rather in disarray and now at the fourth consecutive defeat, for Genoa, that beating Bologna takes for the first time in the season out of the last three positions, and for Spezia, that wins in the Ligurian derby of the monday night against Sampdoria, thus overtaking Udinese and hooking Bologna at 17 points.
In addition to the two long-standing inhabitants of the relegation zone, Crotone and Torino, both defeated, Parma has also been added to the list, whose hasty reinstatement of coach Roberto D'Aversa did not prevent defeat at the hands of Lazio. Fiorentina and Parma are, unfortunately for their fans, classic examples of how the hands of presidents too sick of protagonism (or at worst incompetent) can ruin seasons otherwise destined to an absolute tranquility: what was the point of kicking out on the eve of the championship a prepared coach and that the players knew by heart as D'Aversa, only to realize the mistake and call him back after throwing away half the season? What has changed in Fiorentina after replacing Iachini with Prandelli? Rhetorical questions, for which no answers are needed.
Don't miss the next round of Serie A, which in addition to the capital derby Lazio-Roma, will also propose the so called derby of Italy, between Inter and Juventus, and honestly I wouldn't like to be in the shoes of the losing team, since for the leader Milan a not really impossible engagement in Sardinia against Cagliari is expected. Cari amici, amanti del calcio italiano,
ci avviciniamo a grandi passi verso la fine del girone d'andata dell'edizione 2020/21 del campionato italiano, che passerà alla storia come la seconda giocata nel bel mezzo dell'emergenza legata alla diffusione del covid-19, tra stadi prima chiusi, poi parzialmente riaperti e infine di nuovo richiusi, con una prospettiva per la primavera che, a sensazione, non promette nulla di buono.
In questo marasma generale si comprende come il rimescolamento delle carte sia all'ordine del giorno: squadre che si trovano all'improvviso senza alcuni giocatori titolari perché risultati positivi all'esame diagnostico sul virus, altre che sono costrette a schierare addirittura ragazzi della Primavera e altre ancora (in realtà solo una) che invece decidono di non partire per le trasferte, in quanto bloccate dalla aziende sanitarie territoriali in seguito alla scoperta di alcune positività nel gruppo.
In passato si è parlato spesso di campionati falsati, ma questo, comunque vada a finire, lascerà spazio a recriminazioni da parte di molti, sia sulle decisioni degli organi competenti che sulla sfortuna, rea magari di togliere dai giochi elementi importanti prima di sfide cruciali. In ogni caso il pallone continua a rotolare e con esso galoppa la leadership del Milan, che liquida il derelitto Torino con un secco 2-0, ottenuto nel primo tempo grazie alle reti di Leao e al rigore piuttosto generoso (per fallo commesso da Belotti, che per una sorta di legge del contrappasso si è trovato per una volta dall'altro lato rispetto al tuffatore) trasformato da Kessie.
Ai rossoneri, che fino a qui non possono certo lamentarsi di una sorte avversa, il calendario ha riservato nel momento peggiore della stagione, quello successivo alla prima sconfitta stagionale patita contro i rivali di sempre della Juventus, l'avversario forse più debole del campionato. Un ulteriore passo falso avrebbe potuto minare infatti tutte le certezze accumulate in questa prima parte di stagione, ma bisogna riconoscere a Pioli di aver trasformato un gruppo dato alla vigilia in grado di lottare al massimo per il quarto posto, in una macchina assetata di sangue.
Nonostante i tre punti che la separano dai cugini, l'Inter continua a rimanere, nelle scelte dei bookmakers (e nelle mie personali), la favorita assoluta per la conquista del titolo. Nel big match dell'Olimpico contro la Roma, le due squadre, come spesso è capitato in passato, hanno terminato la sfida in pareggio, dividendosi equamente anche i periodi di dominio all'interno della gara.
Entrambe hanno manifestato punti di forza e di debolezza: il calcio veloce e tecnico, specialmente in ripartenza, della Roma deve far fronte ad evidenti incertezze difensive, che rendono la retroguardia giallorossa una delle più battute del campionato, mentre l'Inter abbina alla qualità dei singoli e alla profondità della rosa una condizione fisica non ottimale e soprattutto un Handanovic particolarmente giù di forma. Le due reti subite dal capitano nerazzurro sono lo specchio delle difficoltà attraversate in questo momento dal portiere sloveno, sul quale pesano gravose responsabilità nella mancata vittoria dei suoi.
La Juventus doma 3-1 un caparbio Sassuolo, ridotto in dieci per l'espulsione a fine primo tempo di Pedro Obiang, e riconquista così il quarto posto, che aveva perso in favore dell'Atalanta nel pomeriggio, portandosi ad un solo punto dalla Roma terza, ma con una partita in meno. Il risultato tuttavia non deve ingannare, perchè per i bianconeri, forse scarichi mentalmente dopo l'impresa di tre giorni prima a San Siro, si è trattato di una delle prestazioni meno convincenti della stagione.
Il Sassuolo ha a lungo tenuto il pallino del gioco anche in inferiorità numerica, eludendo lo stanco pressing bianconero con scambi veloci e ripartenze improvvise; Bonucci, questa volta in coppia con Demiral, continua a manifestare pesanti limiti non solo quando viene puntato in velocità da attaccanti più giovani e veloci, ma anche in marcatura, e il goal di Defrel è il classico esempio di quanto appena descritto. Per la squadra di Pirlo la sensazione rimane quella di un'ampia possibilità di crescita, ma forse molto passa anche dal rapido recupero di Giorgio Chiellini, in una difesa che rimane comunque la meno perforata della Serie A.
Bene anche l'Atalanta, vittoriosa in scioltezza in un campo dove molti hanno faticato (se non addirittura fallito) come quello di Benevento, un po' meno il Napoli, che pur vittorioso ad Udine con uno dei rarissimi goal di Bakayoko allo scadere, ha continuato a mostrare quella sensazione di improvvisazione che spesso si ricava dal gioco della squadra, figlia forse delle idee a volte poco chiare del suo allenatore.
Il trend delle due squadre, ora appaiate in classifica al quinto posto, appare tuttavia opposto: lanciati verso la luna i bergamaschi, stazionari, con outlook negativo i partenopei: sono pronto a pronosticare fin da adesso un'Atalanta nelle prime quattro posizioni a fine campionato e il Napoli costretto ad occupare un posto dal quinto in giù, poiché la statistica insegna che quando si perdono così tante partite (poco meno di un terzo di quelle disputate) difficilmente se ne può ricavare un segnale positivo per il futuro.
Nella parte bassa della classifica, importanti vittorie per la Fiorentina, che riesce a regolare un Cagliari piuttosto allo sbando e giunto alla quarta sconfitta consecutiva, il Genoa, che battendo il Bologna si porta per la prima volta in stagione fuori dalle ultime tre posizioni, e per lo Spezia, che regola nel derby ligure del monday night la Sampdoria, scavalcando così l'Udinese e agganciando il Bologna a quota 17 punti.
Alle due abitanti di lunga data della zona retrocessione, Crotone e Torino, entrambe sconfitte, si aggiunge così anche il Parma, il cui re-inserimento frettoloso del tecnico Roberto D'Aversa non ha fatto in tempo ad evitare la sconfitta per mano della Lazio. Fiorentina e Parma sono, purtroppo per i loro tifosi, classici esempi di come le mani di presidenti troppo malati di protagonismo (o alla peggio incompetenti) possano rovinare stagioni altrimenti destinate ad un'assoluta tranquillità: che senso aveva cacciare alla vigilia del campionato un tecnico preparato e che i giocatori conoscevano a memoria come D'Aversa, per poi accorgersi dell'errore e richiamarlo dopo aver buttato un intero girone? Cos'è cambiato nella Fiorentina dopo la sostituzione di Iachini con Prandelli? Domande retoriche, per le quali non sono necessarie risposte.
Non perdete il prossimo turno della Serie A, che oltre al derby capitolino Lazio-Roma, proporrà anche il cosidetto derby d'Italia, tra Inter e Juventus, e sinceramente non vorrei essere nei panni della squadra perdente, dato che per la capolista Milan si prospetta un impegno non proprio impossibile in Sardegna contro il Cagliari.
