In this season of accelerated rhythms and compressed calendar, there is no time for rest for the protagonists of Serie A:put aside for one evening the skirmishes of the championship, they are ready to dive into a new adventure, that of the Coppa Italia, the second national trophy in order of importance, held by Napoli that last season overcame in the final, in a deserted Olympic stadium, the Juventus on penalties.
From the round of 16 onwards, a round that we are going to live for the most part today, but that has already started yesterday with the victory of Milan over Torino on penalties, the great teams enter the scene, those classified from the first to the eighth place in the last championship of Serie A, and that have been paired with the survivors of the previous rounds. In addition to fourteen teams from the top league, two teams from Serie B are still in the running: Empoli, who were able to eliminate Benevento, and Spal, who beat Crotone.
Revolutionized line-ups and the debut of young semi-unknown players have always been the rule in this tournament, especially in these phases, and the 2020/21 edition of the Cup promises to keep these premises even more; In any case, the draw has given us interesting challenges worthy of being experienced with passion, such as Lazio-Parma, Atalanta-Cagliari, Juventus-Genoa and above all Fiorentina-Inter (on the field as I write), certainly the most interesting of all the matches scheduled for the round of 16.
The six previous matches played in the Coppa Italia in the Tuscan capital began in April 1960, and saw the home team prevail three times, against the only victory of Inter. The Nerazzurri arrive at the challenge inside a mini-period of crisis, which has seen them collect only one point in two games, while for Fiorentina, just back from the painful victory over Cagliari, the Coppa Italia could also represent an opportunity for redemption, in a year that started badly and continued, until now, even worse.
So let's relive all the previous challenges between the two teams, hoping that the exploits of former champions can serve as an incentive for the two teams to provide another great show.
Fiorentina v Inter 2-1 (27 April 1960)
Two goals of the Swede Kurt Hamrin in the first quarter of an hour were enough for the Tuscan team to beat Inter in the quarter-finals of the 1959/60 edition of the Coppa Italia. The Nerazzurri's reaction came only at the end of the match, with a goal by Masiero ten minutes before the end, but not enough to overturn the result. Fiorentina reached the last act of the competition, but they had to surrender to Juventus, who in the final played in Milan won 3-2 after extra time, but still qualified for the Cup Winners Cup after the victory of the Piedmontese in Serie A.
Fiorentina v Inter 2-1 (09 February 1966)
In a magical year that brought Fiorentina to fourth place in the championship, but also to victory in the Coppa Italia and in the Mitropa Cup, the two teams met in Florence for the semi-final in a single match.
Inter took the lead just under a quarter of an hour before the 90th minute thanks to a goal by Jair, but the hosts, spurred on by the cheers of their public, managed to equalise after less than a minute, before scoring the winning goal again with Hamrin, with one lap of the clock to go.
With the 2-1 victory over Catanzaro in the final in Rome, the Viola won their third Coppa Italia in May of the same year.
Fiorentina v Inter 2-2 (05 September 1976)
Two wins and two draws, in the summer preliminary rounds of the 1976/77 Coppa Italia, were not enough for Fiorentina to pass the round, which instead saw Inter qualify and continue their journey to the final. In the direct match of the third day, played in Florence, the home team had the advantage at the start, but had to suffer the comeback of the Nerazzurri who overturned the initial goal of Bertarelli in the second half.
The Romagna-born striker levelled the score in the 74th minute, but in the end the failure to win would weigh heavily on Fiorentina's ranking. The Milanese were promoted to the second round, but had to surrender to Milan in the final at the San Siro.
Fiorentina v Inter 0-0 (24 May 1978)
After both having passed the first qualifying round of the tournament without too many problems, Fiorentina and Inter met again for the second time in two years, but this time in the second phase group. The spectacular 2-2 draw in the first leg on 14 May at the San Siro gave way to a disappointing 0-0 draw in the return leg, played between two teams who were fearful and aware that a defeat would likely end their run one step away from the final.
However, the loss in the last round against Monza was fatal for the Viola, and Inter was able to fly to the final in Rome, where they won 2-1 over Napoli thanks to a goal at the end of the match by Graziano Bini.
Fiorentina v Inter 3-1 (15 February 1996)
It was a hat-trick by the Argentine striker Gabriel Omar Batistuta that defeated Inter in the semi-final first leg of the 1995/96 Coppa Italia, which, together with the goal in the return match, also won by the Viola 1-0, and the two goals (one in the first leg and one in the return) in the double final against Atalanta, helped give the Tuscan club its fifth success in the competition.
Batistuta will also be awarded as the tournament's top scorer (8 goals) and his team's excellent season will be rounded off with fourth place in the championship.

It takes the Inter of the triplete to beat the Fiorentina, in what remains for the moment the Nerazzurri's only victory in the Coppa Italia in Florence.
After having eliminated Livorno in the round of 16 and Juventus in the quarter-finals, Mourinho's men got rid of Fiorentina, beaten by a narrow margin in the first match played at San Siro. In spite of the generosity of the Viola, it was a goal from Samuel Eto'o that decided the match and sanctioned the Nerazzurri's passage to the final, where the future European champions once again beat Roma, thus winning the sixth Coppa Italia in their history.

Cari amici, amanti del calcio italiano,
in questa stagione dai ritmi accelerati e dal calendario compresso, non c'è tempo per il riposo per i protagonisti della Serie A: messe da parte per una sera le schermaglie del campionato, sono pronti infatti a tuffarsi in una nuova avventura, quella della Coppa Italia, secondo trofeo nazionale in ordine di importanza, detenuto dal Napoli che nella scorsa stagione superò in finale, in uno stadio Olimpico deserto, la Juventus ai calci di rigore.
Dagli ottavi di finale in poi, turno che ci apprestiamo a vivere in buona parte oggi, ma che è già cominciato ieri con la vittoria del Milan sul Torino ai calci di rigore, entrano in scena le grandi squadre, quelle classificate dal primo all'ottavo posto nello scorso campionato di Serie A, e che sono state accoppiate alle superstiti dei turni precedenti. Oltre a quattordici squadre del massimo campionato, ritroviamo ancora in corsa anche due squadre di Serie B: l'Empoli, capace di eliminare il Benevento, e la Spal, che ha avuto ragione del Crotone.
Formazioni rimaneggiate ed esordi di giovani calciatori semi sconosciuti sono da sempre la regola per questo torneo, soprattutto in queste fasi, e l'edizione 2020/21 della Coppa promette di mantenere ancoria di più queste premesse; in ogni caso, il sorteggio ha regalato ugualmente sfide interessanti e degne di essere vissute con passione, come Lazio-Parma, Atalanta-Cagliari, Juventus-Genoa e soprattutto Fiorentina-Inter (in campo mentre scrivo), sicuramente quella più interessante tra tutte le partite in programma negli ottavi di finale.
I sei precedenti giocati in Coppa Italia nel capoluogo toscano sono cominciati nell'Aprile del 1960, ed hanno visto prevalere per tre volte la squadra di casa, contro l'unica vittoria dell'Inter. I nerazzurri arrivano alla sfida all'interno di un mini periodo di crisi, che li ha visti raccogliere solo un punto in due partite, mentre per la Fiorentina, reduce dalla sofferta vittoria sul Cagliari, la Coppa Italia potrebbe anche rappresentare un'occasione di riscatto, in un'annata cominciata male e proseguita, fino ad adesso, ancora peggio.
Riviviamo di seguito quindi tutte le precedenti sfide tra le due squadre, sperando che le gesta di antichi campioni possano fungere da stimolo alle due squadre per fornire un altro grande spettacolo.
Fiorentina-Inter 2-1 (27 aprile 1960)
Due goal dello svedese Kurt Hamrin nel primo quarto d'ora bastano alla squadra toscana per regolare l'Inter nei quarti di finale dell'edizione 1959/60 della Coppa Italia. La reazione nerazzurra infatti arriva solo sul finale di gara, con la rete di Masiero a dieci minuti dalla fine, tuttavia insufficiente per ribaltarne l'esito. I viola giungeranno fino all'ultimo atto della competizione, ma dovranno arrendersi alla Juventus, che nella finale disputata a Milano la spunterà 3-2 dopo i tempi supplementari, pur qualificandosi ugualmente per la Coppa delle Coppe in seguito alla vittoria anche in campionato dei piemontesi.
Fiorentina-Inter 2-1 (09 febbraio 1966)
In un'annata magica, che porterà la Fiorentina a conquistare, oltre ad un ottimo quarto posto in campionato, anche la vittoria in Coppa Italia e in Mitropa Cup, le due squadre si ritrovano contro a Firenze per la semifinale in gara unica.
L'Inter va in vantaggio a poco meno di un quarto d'ora dal novantesimo grazie al goal di Jair, ma i padroni di casa, spinti dal calore del proprio pubblico, riescono a pareggiare dopo nemmeno un minuto, per poi realizzare il goal della vittoria definitiva ancora con Hamrin, ad un giro di lancette dalla fine.
Con il 2-1 al Catanzaro nella finale di Roma, i viola si aggiudicheranno a maggio dello stesso anno la loro terza Coppa Italia.
Fiorentina-Inter 2-2 (05 settembre 1976)
Due vittorie e due pareggi, nei gironi estivi preliminari della Coppa Italia 1976/77, non sono sufficienti alla Fiorentina per superare il turno, che vede invece l'Inter qualificarsi e continuare il proprio cammino fino alla finale. Nello scontro diretto della terza giornata, giocato a Firenze, i padroni di casa si fanno preferire all'avvio, ma devono subire il ritorno dei nerazzurri che ribaltano nella ripresa il goal iniziale di Bertarelli.
Toccherà ancora all'attaccante di origine romagnola pareggiare il conto al 74', ma a conti fatti la mancata vittoria peserà come un macigno sulla classifica della Fiorentina. I meneghini verranno promossi al secondo turno, ma si dovranno arrendere al Milan nella finale di San Siro.
Fiorentina-Inter 0-0 (24 maggio 1978)
Dopo aver superato entrambe senza troppi problemi il primo girone eliminatorio del torneo, Fiorentina e Inter si ritrovano di fronte per la seconda volta in due anni, ma questa volta nel raggruppamento della seconda fase. Lo spettacolare pareggio (2-2) della gara d'andata, giocata il 14 maggio a San Siro, lascerà il posto ad un deludente 0-0 al ritorno, tra due squadre timorose e consapevoli che una sconfitta avrebbe verosimilmente messo fine al rispettivo percorso ad una passo dalla finale.
Ai viola sarà tuttavia fatale la sconfitta dell'ultimo turno contro il Monza, e l'Inter potrà così volare nella finale di Roma, dove avrà la meglio 2-1 sul Napoli grazie al goal allo scadere di Graziano Bini.
Fiorentina-Inter 3-1 (15 febbraio 1996)
E' una tripletta del bomber argentino Gabriel Omar Batistuta a stendere l'Inter nella semifinale d'andata della Coppa Italia 1995/96, che unitamente al goal nella partita di ritorno, vinta anch'essa dai viola per 1-0, e ai due messi a segno (uno all'andata e uno al ritorno) nella doppia finale contro l'Atalanta, contribuirà a regalare alla società gigliata il quinto successo della propria storia nelle competizione.
Batistuta sarà anche premiato come capocannoniere del torneo (8 reti) e per la sua squadra l'ottima stagione sarà completata dal quarto posto finale in campionato.
Fiorentina-Inter 0-1 (13 aprile 2010)
Ci vuole l'Inter del triplete per avere ragione della Fiorentina, in quella che rimane per il momento l'unica vittoria nerazzurra di Coppa Italia a Firenze.
Dopo aver eliminato il Livorno agli ottavi e la Juventus nei quarti di finale, gli uomini di Mourinho fanno un sol boccone anche della Fiorentina, battuta di misura anche nella gara d'andata disputata a San Siro. Nonostante la generosità dei viola infatti, è un goal di Samuel Eto'o a decidere la partite e a sancire il passaggio dei nerazzurri in finale, dove i futuri campioni d'Europa avranno ragione ancora una volta della Roma, aggiudicandosi così la sesta Coppa Italia della loro storia.
