SEC - S13W2 | For Reflection
Hello Friends,
Today, I share my publication about "For Reflection / To Think About It" with you all, it is the engagement S13-W2 topic from the Scouts y sus Amigos community. In this contest, we were offered to give our opinions on two out of four listed quotes in;
• Whoever seeks the truth deserves the punishment of finding it. Santiago Ruseñor
• It is better to remain silent and look foolish, than to speak and definitively dispel doubts. Groucho Marx
• If you could kick the ass of the person responsible for almost all your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit down for a month. Theodore Roosevelt
• When I was a little boy I prayed every night for a new bicycle. Then I realized that's not how things work with the Lord, so I stole a bicycle and asked for forgiveness. Emo Philips
So here I will be sharing my options and understanding of the quotations.
2. It is better to remain silent and look foolish than to speak and definitively dispel doubts. Groucho Marx |

We are all familiar with the saying, that says some things are better left unsaid. Hence, I feel Groucho Marx is trying to pass the same message here.
"It is better to remain silent and look foolish than to speak and definitively dispel doubts" means that sometimes it's smarter to keep quiet and let people have their doubts about what they know, have or what I'm up to than speak up to confirm their doubts.
There are two parts in this statement I would like to break down to your interest.
"Remain silent and look foolish"
This means that staying quiet can make others see you as a fool or ignorant. That is, by not sharing your ideas or knowledge, you may appear less knowledgeable or competent.
But the joy that comes with keeping silent is that it keeps them in doubt of your abilities and the actions you are about to carry out.
"Speak and definitively dispel doubts"
Remember your silence puts them in suspense and doubt, therefore this part of the statement means that if you speak up and provide a clear and definitive response, you might dispel any doubts or uncertainties that others have about you.
In turn, if you were to act, this also means that you risk exposing your action plans, or worse exposing your lack of knowledge or making mistakes. Hence, taking away their doubts, or suspense. You might even end up proving their opinion of you right.
This quote suggests that it can be safer to stay silent and let others wonder about your abilities or knowledge rather than speaking up and proving them right. Therefore, it is only a proposition to anyone who cares to listen to that in certain conditions, it might be better to keep silent rather than risk being judged negatively on what you said.
This quote doesn't seek to promote dishonesty or deliberately mislead others in any way, but rather a simple advice that sometimes it's better to let people wonder than to say something that might confirm their doubts about something or you.
1. Whoever seeks the truth deserves the punishment of finding it. Santiago Ruseñor |
|---|
The truth is always hidden and locked away, then it takes a lot of effort to bring out the truth. Hence, the quote suggests that the pursuit of truth can sometimes be challenging or even painful.
"Whoever seeks the truth"
This means someone has to actively search for the truth in various aspects of life such as education, society or belief based on curiosity or the desire to uncover the reality behind things.
"Deserves the punishment of finding it"
Here, the word "punishment" doesn't necessarily mean a negative outcome, but rather the difficulties or challenges we encounter during the search for truth. This only means that the journey to finding truth can be demanding and may require sacrifice, effort, and even facing painful truths.
This teaches that finding truth can be painful and difficult, as it may involve facing painful situations and challenging one's beliefs. However, it also implies that the end of this search for the truth can outweigh the hardships faced along the way.
Therefore, It serves as a motivation, not to scare those who persist in their quest for the truth, even if it means confronting hardships along the way.

Upvoted! Thank you for supporting witness @jswit.
Certainly, there are things that it is better not to say and keep quiet and listen to other points of view, which can enrich our own.
It is often wise to play dumb, especially when we keep silent and wait for the best moment to say, acceptably, what we consider correct on a particular subject.
Happy and blessed afternoon. God's blessings on your life and family.
Saludos @sahmie.
