Plagiarism

“Plagiarism is presenting someone else's work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement. ... Plagiarism may be intentional or reckless, or unintentional.”
University of Oxford

The Most Common Types of Plagiarism

Direct Plagiarism: This is lifting someone else’s work exactly as it is and using it as if it were your own without making it clear the work is not your own by using quotations or other attributions.

Accidental Plagiarism: When a person refuses to quote their source, or incorrectly quotes their source, or inadvertently uses similar words, phrases, and/or unsigned sentence structures to explain the source.

Self Plagiarism: A type of plagiarism in which the author republishes the entire work or reuses parts of the text previously written when creating a new work.

Mosaic Plagiarism: This happens once a student borrows a phrase from a source that has no victimized quotation, or finds a synonym in the author’s language while maintaining the overall structure, which means that the former does not change.

Some Consequences of Plagiarism

Failure on Assignment: For example if you are a student and you are found to be plagiarizing other people's work it can cost you your assignment.

Reduced Grade: Still if you are caught plagiarizing as a student, you stand the risk of getting a reduced mark or grade on the particular work.

Suspension: Plagiarism is an act that is frowned upon to the extent that one can actually get fired or dismissed if they are caught plagiarizing.

How to Avoid Plagiarism

1- The best way to avoid plagiarism is to use your own ideas. Try to always think and write from your own intellect.

2- Never forget to credit the owner of the original content from which you are getting the particular information.

3- Always make sure to put your work through a tool that can check for plagiarism before you publish your work.

4- Always cite the source of the particular information well or do well to use quotation marks very well.

Below is an example of citing the source of the information you are sharing...

According to the World Health Organization, there have been 207,784,507 confirmed COVID-19 cases globally as of 6:28PM CEST 17th AUGUST, 2021.

In Conclusion

From the above write up, it is clear and evident that plagiarism is a serious offense and says bad about a person. So it is important that it is avoided as much as possible. Take that effort to copy others and use it to produce your own content.
