in Newcomers' Community4 years ago (edited)

Hey guys!

It is my humble pleasure to engage you once again in my blog. Achievement 1 & 2 has been done and lessons learnt. It can only get better as I proceed in this new found love of writing articles/Blog.

Achievement_3 Task specifically handles the issue of Content Etiquette which basically has to do with Plagiarism.
This is a community that allows for Sharing of original ideas through write-ups, pictorials and audio-visuals, hence the issue of Content etiquette should be well communicated to all to adhere strictly to rules as it affects sharing and citing of contents. Plagiarism may be intentional, unintentional or out of recklessness.

What then is Plagiarism?
This is a clear representation of another Man's work (i.e Language, ideas/inventions, thoughts...etc) as your original work.
It is also described as presenting someone else's work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement... Source

Forms/ Types of Plagiarism

  • Direct/Intentional Plagiarism
    These are the main causes of intentional/direct Plagiarism
    *Copying and pasting text
    *Web publishing without permission
    *Buying or borrowing papers/articles
  • Mosaic/Unintentional Plagiarism
    These are the main causes of unintentional/Mosaic Plagiarism
    *Poor Documentation
    *Failure to summarizing your article
    *Careless Paraphrasing
    *Not being guided while Quoting

There are other silent forms of Plagiarism which are;

  • Self Plagiarism
  • Accidental Plagiarism

Consequences of Plagiarism

St2_20201117-163540_1[1].png

  • Legal punishments: Most cases of plagiarism are punishable by fines and sometimes up to one year jail term. It is also considered as felony under certain states with up to 10 years jail term.
  • Institutions and organizations lose their reputation due to plagiarism
  • It lowers overall performance, professional, academic and ethical standards of an entity.
  • It disqualifies students/professionals and pose negative credibility on their efficiency to perform.

How to avoid Plagiarism

  • Quoting
  • Paraphrasing
  • Summarizing

Quoting:
This tool should be used when copying an author's work directly from the source. Quoting should be cited when doing the following;

  • When you want to add the power of an author's words to support your argument by highlighting a particular eloquent or powerful phrases or passages of hes'.
  • When you want to disagree with an author's line of argument or compare/contrast with specific points of view.

Paraphrasing:
Unlike quoting, paraphrasing means rephrasing an author's own words . This is reworking the author's ideas, words and sentence structures with own words. Paraphrasing should be used when doing the following;

  • When you want to avoid overusing quotation and also avoid plagiarism.
  • When you want to use your own words in presenting your article.

Summarizing:
This involves putting the main idea(s) of several writers or authors into your own words. Summaries are significantly shorter than the original source materials hence should be well used to avoid plagiarism.
Summarize when:

  • You want to establish background /overview of a topic
  • When you want to ascertain the main ideas of a source and describe a knowledge derived from a source.

Thanks @steemcurator03 for the support always.

Am very happy you have gotten to this stage xcool24. Proof of brain requires that you make original content and not take.the work of others and present as yours. I believe you will always produce content of your own and properly attribute what does not belong to you. Great work.
