My mentor always frowns at me each time I upload a post containing a picture which wasn’t taken by me and I don’t include the source. He always says it is plagiarism and it is not accepted by the steemit community. This achievement 3 post is on plagiarism and why the steemit community detests it.

What is Plagiarism

To my understanding, plagiarism is copying an author or creators ideas without the persons permission or without referencing the person, thereby making it look like it is your original idea.
Either ways plagiarism is not a good practice.
Plagiarism is a crime and can amount to fines and penalties. Sometimes if plagiarism is detected in your work, your work could be canceled.

It is always good to search for copyright free material and always reference the original author of the material.

Ways to reference a copied post

There are posts which has gained copyright and do not appreciate their ideas and writings been copied. For those who are copyright free and allow others copy their ideas we do have to cite and reference them.

  • We could cite by using the > markdown before writing or we use the inverted comas open and close “( )”
  • Since plagiarism also includes photos and videos we can reference those by putting the link of where the photo or video was taken directly under the photo or video. You could also make your work look good by using the markdown [source] (link/source) to reference the link.

Ways to fight plagiarism

  • Creativity: We should try to be creative and write what is from our minds. We shouldn’t just copy and past ideas.
  • If we use someone’s idea or pictures, we should reference them after the post by writing the exact source of the idea.
  • There are copyright free sites like https://www.pexels.com/ and https://pixabay.com/ where one could get copyright free images and videos. Never forget to reference.
