Achievement 6 by @vanessageorge: Understanding Curation and Community

Welcome newcomers to Steemit Platform, Section MARS.

This is week 6 and the final workshop for newcomers. After this workshop, you will be able to choose the section you want to live in. We will be having a break for lunch at the outdoor terrace, don’t forget to grab your oxygen mask and feet weights.

Let’s begin. First, we will be reviewing how voting and curation work in Steemit.

Always Upvote and support quality content, free of plagiarism. The way to upvote is to click on the green arrow at the end of every post. You also have the right to Downvote but be sure to have a very good reason for doing so.

By voting, we engage, support, and boost other users. Upvoting is one of the most important tasks on the Steemit platform and is the way we are able to distribute rewards from the reward pool. Is vital to build up our Steem Power, as the more SP you have the more you will be able to distribute rewards from the reward pool.

Every user starts with 100% of Voting Mana, every time you upvote a post this will use 2% of your Mana and as you upvote with less Voting Mana, the vote will carry less influence. The Voting Mana will automatically recharge by 20% every day, this is the reason why is recommended not to let your Mana be lower than 80%.

As newcomers, you have to always vote with 100% of your voting strength, by the time you reach 500 SP you will be able to select the weight of your vote. The less weight you use the less Voting Mana will be consumed, but it will also affect the influence on the post’s reward.

Now let’s review the curation process. The rewards for each post are allocated 50% for the author and 50% for the curator. The 50% that goes to the curator is ultimately calculated based on the time the vote is cast. If the vote is cast before 5 minutes had passed from the time the post was uploaded, the curator won't receive 100% of its reward. It will return to the prize pool.

The following table shows the percentage of the reward that goes to the curator and back to the prize pool from minutes 1 to 5, minute by minute.

Is time to talk about Witnesses. Steem, like any other blockchain, requires people to crate blocks. In the Steem ecosystem, these people are called the witness and are chosen by a voting system.

There are 20 witness positions to be filled. Each one of you will be able to vote for 30 witnesses. Like any other democracy, get to know the witness and vote for the ones who you think will represent you the best.

For example, I had voted, so far, for @steemchiller, @justyy, @pennif.witness, @xpilar.witness, @alexmove.witness, @stmpak.wit, @visionaer303, and @fuli. These ones are the witnesses that in a short period of time had shown me their dedication to the Steenit platform. Choose yours wisely!

For the final point of the workshop, we will be talking about communities. There are plenty of good communities to choose from on the Steemit platform. The best way to choose the ones you want to be part of is by compatibility. That is what I did, I chose to be part of the communities in which I share an interest.
