The 7th commandment of God in the Holy Bible says thou shall not steal. Every society's ethic condemns the act of taking that which belongs to another. However, it's funny how this command which seems simple for any moralist to apply ends up being the most defaulted.

Many times, people end up doing these things unconsciously. This is because stealing can take different forms. Apart from taking the physical property of another, ideas can also be stolen and this is termed plagiarism.

A quick definition of plagiarism

Plagiarism has to do with the act of taking someone else's work or ideas and presenting them as yours.

Academic fraud or plagiarism as the case may be is not only common amongst intellectuals. In the present day, there has been a tremendous rise in the number of images, music, ideas and other forms of creativity that lack proper credit to their original authors.

TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

  • Global plagiarism
  • Mosaic plagiarism
  • Paraphrasing plagiarism
  • Verbatim or direct plagiarism
  • Self-plagiarism
  • Incorrect plagiarism

GLOBAL PLAGIARISM

Global or complete plagiarism is a situation where someone copies another person's work or idea without acknowledging the original author. This is common on social media platforms. Every content creator loves when his or her ideas are appreciated but it becomes wrong when people copy an entire work from another person's timeline or book to theirs without using the symbol #copied or preferably ©️. Another example is intellectual theft.

MOSAIC PLAGIARISM

Mosaic plagiarism happens when a person gathers information from different sources then brings them together without using quotation marks to acknowledge the different sources.

PARAPHRASING PLAGIARISM

This involves presenting someone's writing but in other words.

E.g.

Original: Symptoms of influenza include fever and nasal congestion.
Paraphrase: A stuffy nose and elevated temperature are signs you may have the flu. Source

SELF PLAGIARISM

It occurs when a person reuses a work [s]he had already made in the past.

VERBATIM OR DIRECT PLAGIARISM

It is almost like global plagiarism but this involves copying and pasting a part which could be a few sentences, paragraphs or chapters without citing sources.

INCORRECT PLAGIARISM

It is an act of misquoting or not citing the correct source. One is still guilty of plagiarism even when this is done out of ignorance.

CONSEQUENCES OF PLAGIARISM

  • Copyright infringement.
  • Expulsion or a fail grade for students.
  • It could affect a person's reputation, especially on steemit.

HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM

Once a person acquires knowledge about plagiarism, it becomes important to put it into practice. Example:

  • Using quotes
  • Citing sources
I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them.
