Introducing Tennis for all Uganda - Achievement 1(verification)

We are a local charity based in the heart of Kampala. We are a youth-led Tennis for development organisation using tennis as a vehicle for positive social change in the lives of slum children in Uganda.

We seek to change lives, one game at a time, through structured tennis programs. We empower, mobilize, and educate slum children both boys and girls through tennis.

To these boys and girls; we offer tennis and health education and social support. Currently, TFAU offers regular educational programs, free tennis training, and hosts tournaments and camps welcoming hundreds of children from the slums of Naguru, Godown and Kamwokya.

These slums have earned their reputation as some of the toughest slums in Kampala, with high crime rates, truancy, substance abuse, obesity, teen pregnancy, and academic failure. On weekends and holidays, more than 200 children between the age of 6 to 18 years come from these slums to our centers and participate in our programs. We believe that sport can encourage these children to live better lives, while also providing them with skills to succeed in the future.

Today, half of the players on the Under 12 and Under 14 Ugandan national tennis team come from the TFAU tennis program. Our students appreciate that tennis can be a lifelong social activity, a fitness/health maintenance vehicle and an instrument to better understand that everyone is equal. TFAU seeks to implement academic improvements, good citizenship qualities, and self-esteem enhancement, which directly correlate into greater mental and physical health, and enhanced employment skills of these slum children.

Through tennis at TFAU, kids who initially had no pride in themselves and no positive outlook on the future are given opportunities and skills to succeed, and are transformed into confident, well rounded individuals with dreams that are able to become a reality."
