PLAGIARISM

  • Definition

  • Types

  • Ways to avoid it

DEFINITION: What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is the stealing, copying or tweaking of someone’s ideas or intellectual property without proper referencing or stating the source the ideas were gotten from. It is an unethical practice academically and journalistically.
On its own, plagiarism is not a criminal offence but based on the institution, platform or organization in question, it could have serious implications or consequences, ranging from low grades, to failing a course, downright expulsion, job loss or tarnishing of reputation.
Severe plagiarism in much stronger industries can also lead to charges been pressed and prosecution of the accused individual if found guilty.
Plagiarism is a sign of laziness, lack of creativity and ignorance and has no place in any level of organization.

TYPES:

  • Plagiarism varies and can range from mild to severe. Some examples include:
  • Verbatim (word for word) plagiarism: This involves copying an other individuals idea; either just a section or the whole piece without omission of any idiolect used by the author of the piece that was copied, without proper quotation or reference citation.
  • Paraphrasing: Changing a few words but copying the general idea of a piece and not attributing the credit to that piece.
Passing off another’s work as your own.
  • Auto Plagiarism: Passing up your previous work or taking sections to use in another project without getting permission from all the authorities involved in the authorisation of the previous piece.
  • Cutting and joining ideas from multiple pieces without proper references.
Improper use of quotations and referencing techniques.
  • Collusion: Working together with people on a piece that’s supposed to be done individually.
  • Unintentional plagiarism: This happens when an individual unknowingly copies a piece without intentions of plagiarism or references wrongly.

WAYS TO AVOID PLAGIARISM:

Plagiarism is caused by ignorance most times. Educating yourself about it is the best way to avoid it.
In the academic system, it can be caused by laziness. Hard work and avoidance of procrastination are key here.
Make use of online plagiarism checkers.
Be sure to read through multiple versions of a topic before putting anything down so you can have the general idea of the topic so as to know what it’s about, and whatever you put down would be from your own understanding, void of language repetitions and improper idea appropriation.
Make use of proper reference styles and techniques.
Getting advice when confused on how to work on a project.

SUMMARY:

Plagiarism is an avoidable phenomenon that occurs in everyday events. Ranging from photoshoots, to media publication or music releases. It’s simply the act of taking credit for intellectual property that isn’t yours.
And various steps can be taken to avoid it. But the best is proper education on the topic.

Say no to plagarism, be honest and be original.
