Hi everyone, hope you are all good. I am glad to be in writing my achievement task 3 this minute. This task is focused mainly on content etiquette which are rules that control the accepted behaviour when creating contents on Steemit. One of the major content etiquette is Avoid plagiarism

What is plagiarism?

According to Merriam-webster online dictionary, plagiarism simply means stealing and passing off another's idea or words as one's own without crediting the source. It is also known as literary theft source

What works can be plagiarized?

Various works can be plagiarized ranging from academic writings, articles, books, music, video and images.

What are considered plagiarism?

There are certain actions considered plagiarism source. They are:

  • turning in someone else's work as your own.
  • copying words or ideas from someone without giving credit.
  • failing to put a quotation in quotation marks.
  • giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation.
  • changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit.
  • copying so many ideas or words from a source that makes up majority of your work, whether you give credit or not.

Consequences of plagiarism

  1. Plagiarism is literary fraud and shows signs of dishonesty.
  2. It makes your work look unprofessional and readers cannot acquire or make further research on their own regarding that particular topic
  3. It can damage your reputation and can result in legal issues if sued.
  4. On steemit, your post can be flagged down and not rewarded. It is also removed on the platform which means that your efforts are totally in vain.

Types of plagiarism

According to https://www.scribbr.com,there are 5 types of plagiarism which are:

  • Global plagiarism
  • Verbatim plagiarism
  • Paraphrasing plagiarism
  • Patchwork plagiarism
  • Self-plagiarism

Global plagiarism

Plagiarizing an entire text i.e. submitting a work completely done by someone else.

Verbatim plagiarism

Directly copying someone's words without citing the source or using quotation marks

Paraphrasing plagiarism

Rephrasing someone else's ideas and presenting them as if they were your own original thoughts.

Patchwork plagiarism

Copying phrases, passages and ideas from different sources and compiling them into a new text.

Self-plagiarism

Recycling previous work that you've already submitted or published.

How to avoid plagiarism

A sure way to do this is through proper citation
Proper citation helps to protect you from plagiarism accusation while ensuring you maintain a professional blog

How to cite

  • Give a link to the source by putting the copied sentence in quotes '' '' or using the > markup
  • In cases where the sentence is paraphrased, a reference should be close to it to indicate its original source source
  • When citing an image which can be sourced from free websites such as shutterstock, pexels or unsplash, you either add the link or use the markup template to source the webpage links into your article.

Avoid plagiarism at all costs. It is fraud in itself and is being frowned at in the platform. Steemit also has a community with members who help to clean all plagiarized and spam contents on the platform. We have come to the end of our plagiarism article.
