What Is Plagiarism?

Did you know that just like many cool words, plagiarism comes from Latin too? The word ''plagium'' means ''kidnapping'' in Latin.

So what is plagiarism then? In brief it means stealing someone else's work and make it look like it is yours.

Just like stealing someone's purse stealing someone's words is a crime too.

Although getting inspiration from other people's work is the key to the progress we made so far as human beings -since all of the literary works, philosophical ideas and scientific facts are generated by the inspiration of other peoples work.- Plagiarism doesn't serve any good to the human mind as it presents nothing new.

Here are some types of plagiarism ;

"Direct Plagiarism

"Direct plagiarism is the word-for-word transcription of a section of someone else’s work, without attribution and without quotation marks.

"Accidental Plagiarism

"Accidental plagiarism occurs when a person neglects to cite their sources, or misquotes their sources, or unintentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words, groups of words, and/or sentence structure without attribution.

"Mosaic Plagiarism

"Mosaic Plagiarism occurs when a person borrows phrases from a source without using quotation marks, or finds synonyms for the author’s language while keeping to the same general structure and meaning of the original." ^Source

How Do We Avoid Plagiarism

Steemit is a platform where we should post our own original content so to avoid plagiarism we should always use citation when we are using someone else's work in our blog. There are also websites that can detect plagiarism so checking the content before posting would be a great way to avoid plagiarism.
