Security on the Steemit platform is more important than any other social network, so all protection measures must be known and followed.
In order to achieve the highest level of protection, the platform provide a variety of keys.

masster password:

steemit generate this password for you when you sign up. Its main use is to recovrey compromised account. Due to its importance, you must save it in a safe place and from better to be offline. Through the Master Password you can obtain all other keys of the account, and if anyone can steal it, they can control the entire account and there is no way to recover it.

Different keys provided by stemit

Posting key:

It gives you the authority to do every day activities like post content, comment, edit, vote, resteem, and follow or mute other accounts. Extensive use of Posting key has increased the possibility of key compromised, and for this reason there is a limited posting key to minimize the damage If the account has been compromised.

Active key:

It is more powerful than the posting key and used sensitive tasks such as transferring funds, power up/down transactions, converting Steem Dollars, voting for witnesses, updating profile details and avatar, and placing a market order.

Owner key:

It is one of the most important and powerful keys, and is the only one through which you can change all the other keys, even the owner key itself.

Memo key:

In some articul I have read in steemit, they said the memo key used to send encrypted messages and see them if they are sent to you.
But according to the Steem FAQ the memo key Currently the memo key is not used.

What will hapen if I lost my password/keys:

if you lose your master password there is no way to recover it, so that is why you must save your master password in a safe storage. But if you lost any other key you can recover it with master password.
