{Achievement 2 - @fendit } - Basic Security for our accounts on Steem

in Newcomers' Community4 years ago (edited)

Hey, you all!

As you may notice, I'm quite new here! I'm still getting used to some things and learning how to get the most out of this wonderful experience! If you're willing to get to know me a little better, you can find my introduction here on Steem Greet.

As requested by @cryptokannon, I'm here to fulfill my second achievement, which is fully related to keeping our account safe and to be aware of the special care we should have with our keys.

So, if you had to describe what you see on the picture below, what would you answer?

You see different types of keys, right? Well, this concept also applies to your Steem account. It is vital for you to understand that this is no joke! This is what makes Steem extra safe, in comparison with any other social network you may use. You were provided one master key and four other keys, we'll talk about it now:

Master Key

As it says, it's the most important key, since it allows you to do everything. But beware, once you lose it, you can never get it/your account back, so you'd better be careful about it and have several back ups. It is highly recommended to keep this key written down somewhere you know you won't lose it. It's no joke, huh?
Also, if you get to lose some other key, this one allows you to retrieve it.

Posting Key

You'll be in touch with this one every single day: it allows you to log into Steem for content posting, make comments and voting!

Active Key

So, you've already read about the master of all keys and the one that you'll use the most... what now?!
Well, this key allows you to make money movements (transferring funds, for instance) with all the Steem and SBDs you've earned! Things got interesting now, don't they? Haha.

Owner Key

To make it simple, this key allows you to change the other keys. It'd be pretty wise if you kept a copy of this one on a safe place, as well as the master key.

Memo Key

Finally, we will use this one when encrypting or decrypting memos while transferring funds! These messages will be shown in your Wallet as money.

So, after all this? What do we do if we lose our keys?

Well, darling, we warned you: there's no way to get it back. So please, be conscious and bare in mind that your account has real value, it'd be a shame if you lost it.

Just a few tips on how to increase your account's security:

  • Don't lose your password. Seriously, never. Never ever.
  • Keep your keys in places only where you can get them.
  • Don't tell your password to anybody.
  • If you can remember your keys, then they're not safe enough! Random ones tend to be the best and safest ones!
