in Newcomers' Community3 years ago (edited)

Greetings Steemit friends. After my achievement 2 accomplishment was verified, I have the pleasure to bring to you my Achievement 3 post on Content Etiquette for verification. This time around I am answering the question: What is plagiarism? Types of plagiarism, and how can we stop plagiarism. But the main focus of this post will be on using citation and markdown

WHAT IS PLAGIARISM

"Plagiarism is the appropriation of another person's work, be it text or image, without any attempt to give them credit. The goal of the plagiarist is to make it appear as if themselves are the source of the work." Link

TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

According to an article published by Eassom in 2013 on types of plagiarism1 10 types of plagiarism due exist as noted below

  1. SECONDARY SOURCES (Inaccurate citation). This happens when a writer uses a secondary source like a secondary study but only cites the primary sources found within the secondary one.

  2. INVALID SOURCES (Misleading citation, Fabrication, Falsification). This usually occurs when a writer references either an incorrect or nonexistent source.

  3. DUPLICATION (Self-plagiarism, Reuse).
"Duplication happens when a researcher reuses work from their own previous studies and papers without attribution."

  4. PARAPHRASING (Plagiarism, Intellectual theft). "Paraphrasing is taking another person’s writing and changing the words, making it appears that an idea or even a piece of research is original when, in truth, it came from an uncited outside source."

  5. REPETITIVE RESEARCH (Self-plagiarism, Reuse). This happens when studies on a related topic are repeated with similar result but the earlier research is not cited properly.

  6. REPLICATION (Author Submission Violation). This happens when the same manuscript is published more than once.

  7. MISLEADING ATTRIBUTION (Inaccurate Authorship). This happen when authors are denied credit for partial or significant contributions made to a study, or when authors are cited in a paper although no contributions were made.

  8. UNETHICAL COLLABORATION (Inaccurate Authorship). This happens when people use written work, outcomes and ideas that are the result of collaboration, without citing the collaborative nature of the study and participants involved.

  9. VERBATIM PLAGIARISM (Copy-and-Paste. Intellectual Theft). This is when you copy another’s words and works without providing proper referencing. It can take two forms. First, you cite the source you borrowed from, but no indicate that it’s a direct quote. In the second, no referencing at all is provide.

  10. COMPLETE PLAGIARISM (Intellectual Theft, Stealing). This is when you take someone else work and simply resubmit it as yours.

HOW TO STOP PLAGIARISM

Researchers have come up with the following guides to help us produce plagiarism free content. Source here

  1. Check your content through plagiarism software.
