Achievement 3 by @akatimohammed Task : Content Etiquette

in Newcomers' Community3 years ago (edited)

Hi everyone,
Here is my achievement 3, and I hope you all enjoy it.

As a newcomer on steemit or any other blogging site, it is likely, you might not be familiar with the rules and regulations regarding how to post, where to get information, and how to cite information you have gotten from other sources. This can make your work more difficult or even worse, get you into copyright issues. Steemit in other to make sure that all its members know how to start their journey has put in place achievement 3 which teaches and guides new steemians on Content Etiquette.

Content Etiquettes, ensure that newcomers in the community remain professional in their blogging and give them the required knowledge they need on how to carry out their activities of blogging. Also, Content Etiquettes helps ensure that newcomers learn how to avoid legal issues with government, institutions, or individuals.
That being said, I would like to talk about the one major problem that most newcomers in the blogging scene face; Plagiarism.

Personally, I define plagiarism as the act of using someone else's work without their consent or without giving them credit. The aim of a plagiarist is to make it look like they are the original owners of the work.

The Cambridge Dictionary, defines plagiarism as "the process or practice of using another person's ideas or work and pretending that it is your own." Source

The act of Plagiarism is criminalized in most countries and therefore should be avoided as much as we can. Plagiarism can be subjected to different types of punishment which may include fines, imprisonment, and so on. In the field of academia, plagiarism can lead students to get zero marks in their work or expulsion from school. Also, there are several known instances where workers were forced from their institutions for not producing original content or plagiarising.
The types of plagiarism include:

"1.Copying words or ideas from someone else without giving them credit.
2.Using portions of text from a single source without using quotes and citations.
3.Failing to put a direct quote in quotation marks.
4.Paraphasing from multiple sources and making the text fit together.
5.Submitting someone else's work, words, or ideas as your own.
6.Combining thoroughly cited sources with an uncited portion of copied text without giving credit.
7.Submitting work with a proper citation but virtually with no original content.
8.Changing someone's work, but copying the sentence structure of the source material without giving credit." Source

Plagiarism can take different forms and this hitherto, made it very difficult to figure out. With the help of advanced programs, applications and websites, plagiarism can now be checked within a few minutes. Sometimes, the act of plagiarising can be unintentional but one should always remember that the law will not pardon you for your ignorance. So the best thing is to try as much as you can to avoid it.

The best way to avoid plagiarism is to often cite your work to the original research you go your information from or source. You can do this by putting phrases, information, or quotes incorporated from someone's research into quotation marks and putting links to send readers to the original document. Doing this makes your work look professional and also helps you to further prove your point to your readers. Phrases or ideas can be borrowed from someone's work only if they are cited properly but in situations, where your work predominantly consists of someone's work or ideas, you may still be susceptible to charges of plagiarism. Facts are readily available and therefore, shall not always be subjected to copyright but in a situation where the fact got revealed by someone's research, that fact should be cited to the original research.

Lastly, images are also subjected to copyright, therefore, you are supposed to cite them as well.

This is my take on PLAGIARISM. I hope you have enjoyed it.
THANK YOU
