in Newcomers' Community3 years ago (edited)

Warm greetings fellow steemians

Today I’m happy because I finally finished my achievement1 and achievement2 tasks and got verified some days ago. Below is my achievement3 task write up which is about content etiquette. I will be talking about plagiarism, stating and explaining different types, giving ways to avoid them and finally the effects of the practice of plagiarism.

PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism is the act of taking someone’s ideas, information, language, or content without giving credit to the original author(s). Plagiarism as defined by the oxford dictionary is:

the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own.

Below are some common examples of plagiarism practiced all the time.

TYPES OF PLAGIARISM AND HOW TO AVOID THEM
1. Direct plagiarism
This plagiarism is also known as “copy and paste” and it’s done by copying word to word the information or idea on an author’s work or documents from different authors without quoting them and citing their sources as if they are original yours. To avoid this, when taking other author’s words from their articles, put them in “quotes”. For example, @acbaby said:

when taking other author's words from their articles, put them in “quotes”.

2. Accidental plagiarism
This type of plagiarism occurs when an author unintentionally copy’s the work of another author without giving credit to the original author due to maybe negligence. This is also punishable like the others as one is required to give credit to every author from whose work you got information or ideas. To avoid this type of plagiarism one has to be very vigilant in writing making sure contents from elsewhere are given credit to their authors.

3. Complete plagiarism
This is one of the worst forms of plagiarism. It occurs when an author completely steals the work of others and showcases it claiming the ideas fully belong to him/her as the sole owner of that information. To avoid this type of plagiarism one has to live by research morals and ethics in writing.

4. Self plagiarism
This is a commonly neglected form of plagiarism practice by some authors. This is plagiarism where an author copies his/her own article or an idea from the article without properly citing that article and the author even though he/she is the author. To avoid this type of plagiarism, one should make sure that every idea written on a new article should not contain any information from previously posted articles and if it thus contains ideas from the previous article, he/she should properly cite the previous document.

5. Mosaic plagiarism
This is plagiarism done when an author takes the combination of several ideas from different authors and puts them in a particular format statement. To avoid this type of plagiarism, every idea from an author should be taken note of and if one uses a collection of ideas from different authors, it is only right to properly cite all of them in-text. For example, mosaic plagiarism as defined by Scribbr and Bowdoin says:

Mosaic plagiarism means using various phrases, passages and ideas from different sources to create a kind of patchwork that still has the original ideas of the authors but in a transformed manner.

6. Paraphrasing plagiarism
This is the most common type of plagiarism. It is done by writing an author’s ideas in your own words but maintaining the author’s original ideas. To avoid this type of plagiarism, one has to write and properly cite the authors whose ideas have been paraphrased in the new article.

7. Global plagiarism
This type of plagiarism is when one submits work done by others in his/her name. It includes paying people to write articles for you without credit given to the original author in the article.

SOME EFFECTS OF PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism causes a content creator to be very lazy since they have the laxity to copy work done by others. When plagiarized works are identified, they may be rejected in the institution from which they were submitted and in some cases the plagiarizer may be sanctioned or banned from that institution. Plagiarism is punishable by copyright laws.

CONCLUSION

Generally, according to the steemit platform I would like to conclude that any material written with the ideas of another person’s work, article or blog post should be well cited. In the case of a word to word copying, quotations should come to play.

I have read and fully understood the steemit Etiquette on the Steemit Community and I will do to my best to embrace them
