POROS OF PAURAVAS

After winning Bactria (Persia), Alexander marched towards Bharata (India). Alexander crossed the Hindu Kush with a sizeable force of Greek and Asiatic men. He first met with King Ambhi of Taxila (now in Pakistan). King Ambhi understood that he was no match for the Greek king. So he joined with Alexander to defeat his archenemy, King Poros/Porus of Pauravas.

The Kingdom of Paurava stretched through the region between Hydaspes (Jhelum River) and Acesines (Chenab River), in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent.

King Poros was a legendary warrior with extraordinary skills. When all the other kings surrendered to the Greek king, Poros had other plans. King Poros fought against Alexander in the epic Battle of the Hydaspes.

In the Battle of Hydaspes, Poros led huge infantry, cavalry, 1,000 chariots, and 200 war elephants. Alexander and Ambhi, on the other hand, commanded a Greek army with auxiliaries in the Balkans, Persians, and other Asians and Indians.

It was the most disastrous battle in Alexander's whole life. The Pauravas wielded swords that could cut a man in half. Chariots with scythes cut the limbs. The Macedonians saw war elephants for the first time in their lives. Both camps claimed many lives. Seeing how Poros valiantly defended Paurava, Alexander wanted to meet with the king.

Witnessing the plunder of the war, lost two of his son, and some relatives in battle, King Poros finally surrendered and agreed to meet Alexander in person. At this point, Alexander asked Poros how he would be treated, to which Poros replied, "How one king treats another."

After the narrow defeat against Pauravas, Alexander stopped his expedition in India.

My nickname is @kingporos. As you can imagine, why I nicknamed myself after the great King POROS who stopped Alexander the Great.

During my earliest days on internet when i started to use kingporos as my handle name in various sites I didn't know it will become my nickname and would be associated with my identity later. Thank you @slon21veka for oraganising this contest!. I never thought I would be able to tell the story behind my nickname.
