            INTRODUCTION

Hello everyone @HealthySteem, it has been a very busy week for me. But seeing this contest is one that I need to write about, because it is more of a personal travail we went through.
Being a caregiver is never an easy task, but one has to help out when the circumstances presents itself. Sometimes it could be very frustrating and tiring, one might lose their minds in the process. Being a caregiver needs a lot which will be discussed in this writeup.

Have you played the role of caregiver or do you know someone who has put it into practice? Tell us about it.

In the year 2011, my grandmother visited us and stayed with us for some months. She was healthy and well. She ate good food and we had no reasons to worry of her health. Though she has had past health issues but she was better.

On a faithful day, she went out on a morning and she fell down on the way. We thought it was nothing, and there was no cause for alarm. But that evening she fell again in the house and that was the last time she stood up on her own. We went on to become caregivers for the next 5 years with my parents and siblings. All family of 5 people were caregivers to my ill grandmother who was diagnosed of full stroke.

We took her to a hospital in calabar, a close location to my state. We tended to her till her medication was over. We stayed away from school for one month to take care of her. We couldn't just leave our mom to take care of her alone. The medication wasn't showing any progress and we had to take her to our uncle's house in Calabar.

While we went back to Uyo, My mother took care of our grandmother. She stayed for 3 months and our Aunty took over for some months. After some time, the situation got worse.

My grandmother asked to be sent back to the village, her health got worse but she could do everything else except to stand or walk. We had a wheelchair for her.

My mom was the caregiver for months, she took her bath and cleaned her every single day. Sometimes my grandmother was so frustrated and asked God to allow her die. She couldn't stand to see her child suffer, she couldn't stand living a life where she couldn't move on her own.

We do go to the village during holidays to help my mom and at some point, we needed our mother because we didn't have that motherly love at home any more.

So we brought our grandmother to come and stay with us since there was nobody to take care of her.

She stayed for 2 years with us. We did our best for her. She didn't wake up on a faithful Sunday. Her pains were gone, ours too was lifted and we were happy that we did our best to take care of her till she died.

👩‍⚕️ Do you think that caring for a sick person should be a team effort or the work of a single person?

Caring for a sick person should never be the work of a single person. It is better if it is a team work. One person will get tired, and also frustrated and might even fall sick. When my mom was doing the job alone in the village, she was sick for some time, she was so stressed.
Carrying my grandmother wasn't easy for her but she still had to do it.

So being a caregiver is better if it is done by a team. Like when we teamed up to take care of my grandmother, the burden felt easier and we could still go about our day's activities.

👩‍⚕️ What qualities do you think a caregiver should have?

Being a caregiver is never an easy task and should be done with people who have the following qualities, else there would surely be problems...
The following are qualities a caregiver should have:

  • Empathy : A care giver should have a great heart of compassion. Should be able to help the sick person.

  • Patience: Having patience is the hardest part of being a caregiver. One has to endure the frustrations that comes with the job

  • Communication: The caregiver should be able to communicate efficiently with the sick person. Keep her company and also listen to the person.

These three qualities are very important, but there are other qualities needed by a caregiver.

👩‍⚕️ What advice would you give to a person who is performing this role?

To a person who is performing this role, make sure to be patient with the sick person. Help them with all you have. But also make sure you take care of your health while being a caregiver. Your mental and physical health can be harmed while doing this role.

Don't complain and nag too, it makes the patient frustrated and sad.
Show them love!

I felt emotional after reading this post. Someone will suffer to care for a loved one, spend enough money on that person's head and yet still, that person kicks the bucket. Anyways, some will think God Is actually the cause of their suffering or really don't care even after the prayers but there's more. It's interesting to know you did your best in supporting your mum whenever she needed assistance as being a caregiver should be done by one single entity. The qualities you outlined here are essential. Without patience, you can easily become annoyed, curse the person and do other things not worth it. Thanks for sharing. I'll love to ask......

What if you spend over 30 million naira treating a loved one and yet no recovery even after you've moved the person from hospital to hospital, what would you do in this case? 😂
