Steem for better health program #4: Outbreak of cholera
Hello healthy steamians welcome to my health program this week, This week I will be featuring the out break of cholera in Nigeria so this post is necessary and this health warning is very vital.
You need to read this post and then abide by it so as to stay free from cholera help your friends help your family to also stay free from cholera.
So in this post we will consider the meaning of cholera, the symptoms, how it is being transmitted and how to prevent it, to begin let know what cholera is.
Cholera is a bacterial disease which causes acute diarrhea and dehydration. This is always as the result of ingesting infected food or water which is contaminated with the bacterium vibrio cholerae.
Vibrio cholerae bacteria causes cholera infection. The effect of this disease is as a result of a toxin the bacteria produces in the small intestine and this toxin causes the body to secrete enormous amounts of water which leads to diarrhea and a rapid loss of electrolytes.
Some people who contact this bacteria may not fall ill but they can spread the bacteria to others through their Faeces which contaminate foods and water. So once another person ingest this bacteria he or she may fall sick.
This bacteria can be found in
- Grains
- Raw fruits and vegetables
- Seafood
- Water
- Poor hygiene
- Open defecation
So when you come back from the market be sure you wash all food clean before consuming them.
- Diarrhea
- Dehydration
- Nausea and vomiting
- Muscle cramps
- Loss of skin elasticity
- Weight loss
Drink clean and treated water.
Wash your hands using soap and running water so as to avoid contacting it on a surface or hand greetings.
Avoid touching surfaces in a public area.
Dispose faeces properly and wash your hands after that.
Vaccinate your children.
Maintain good proper hygiene.
Currently in Nigeria we are already having an outbreak of cholera It has affected 30 states out of 36 states that we have in Nigeria so you know what that means. So we have a lot of patients out there in the hospital which are affected face bacteria infection.
Therefore if you are in Nigeria and you are reading this by post, please be careful of cholera. If you see any symptoms immediately rush to the hospital to be taken proper care of, please do not manage it on your own before it gets severe.
Last week, I was assigned to one village hospital that has has a lot of infected patients and so I help the health workers over there. It wasn't really easy but I have to mask up myself to prevent myself first and ensure i washed my hands regularly.
I avoided touching of surfaces so as not to contact it you know I'm nursing a baby and of course it is dangerous but then we need to safe life. So this is one of the things we encounter on a daily basis in order to save life.
