When can we say that a person is an alcoholic? Give reasons for your answer! |
---|
To begin with, it is proper for me to better explain what the term alcoholic mean so as to help better the understanding of all my readers. From my understanding, the word "alcoholic" simply indicates that the object or person of focus is associated with alcohol. Now, for someone to be termed as being an alcoholic person, he or she must have a drinking problem (addiction). Such a person is affected with alcoholism.
Haven said that, a person is said to be an alcoholic when he/she depends on alcohol intake so as to feel normal, or relieved from a symptom. To drink everyday actually doesn't term you alcoholic if we are to used the term properly; what labels you as such solely depends on whether your drinking habits warrants a medical solution. When you start to experience anomalies that develop as a result of your excess intake of alcohol, be at interfering with daily activities, socialization, or/and above all your health, it becomes a call for concern.
Do you think alcohol is a drug? justify your answer! |
---|
Yes alcohol is a drug. The intake of alcohol within our society has become so normalized to the point wherein the public has forgotten completely that it actually characterizes as a drug.
For better understanding, we all first need to know what the term "drug" actually means. Taking from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "Drugs are substances capable of altering a person's mind and/or body functions". With this definition, we all can agree without a doubt that alcohol is indeed a drug. I guess what confuses a vast portion of the public is the fact that alcohol is used as a term to refer to drinks. It is worth noting that the severity of its effect (alcohol as a substance in drinks) depends of its quantity in that said drink.
Alcohol (as a substance on its own) is used in hospitals as a drug, alongside other drugs. In fact, it is one of the most used drug in history. Alcoholic drinks could be used to clean up wounds and sterilize tools to avoid infections. It's effectivity in such a case depends on the quantity (concentration) of alcohol proportion.
Can alcoholism be considered a disease? How to control it! |
---|
Yes, alcoholism is in fact a disease. An alcoholic person is simply suffering from the effects of alcoholism. It is worth noting that the term "alcoholic", is no longer used as part of medical care; rather the words Alcohol use disorder (AUD) could be used to address such a medical condition. This simply means that the person has difficulties in controlling his/her alcoholic intake, despite adverse social or health repercussions.
Definition
A disease is any disorder of structure or function in a human, animal, or plant, especially one that has a known cause and a distinctive group of symptoms, signs, or anatomical changes.
~Oxford Dictionary
The effect of alcoholism meets this said definition as we can agree that its victims no longer have 100% control over mind and body functions.
- Reach out for help. In other words, be open to medical treatments and advise.
- Take up therapy sessions if needed. This could help you unravel the reason for your alcoholism.
- Change your environment if need arises. A change of scenery could speed up your recovery.
- Join groups that have people struggling with, or/and have overcome. This should help you gain assistance and build up the will to push on, believing that it is possible.
- Take a break from alcoholic intake, until you are certain that you can control your urge.
- Make out time for yourself and keep reminding yourself of the benefits that comes with good health.
Is every drinker considered an alcoholic? |
---|
No! Not all drinkers are considered alcoholic. I will just place emphasis on what I already said in Question 1 above, which perfectly answers this Question.
To be an alcoholic simply means that you are suffering from "Alcohol use Disorder (AUD)", and as such it becomes a medical problem. For you to be labeled alcoholic means you can't control your alcohol intake despite its adverse effects to your social, work and/or health activities. If we are to start using the word "alcoholic" right, we will realize that we have labeled the wrong people in the past. Alcoholism doesn't doesn't depend on how often you drink, it depends on whether you are addicted to alcohol intake or not.
As such, not every drinkers is to be considered an alcoholic.
Alcohol posse a lot of problems to many societies just as you've outlined. For example looking at our youthful population almost everyone is excited about alcohol and some take in other hard drugs and combine with the alcohol causing damage to their health.
Controlling oneself from alcohol is good and you've given good strategies. Also it is very good to have positive combination that those who will influence you to take alcohol. Healthy company leads to good health
Thanks for sharing with us and good luck in the contest
Thank you so much for stopping by. Indeed our company influences our life's choices. Let us help one another to control our alcohol intake, for those that love drinking. Drinking becomes a problem when abused.
Alcoholism is a man made problem, as this is an abuse of the substance alcohol, and like every other abuse, it brings negative effects to our health. Therefore we cannot generalize it by saying alcohol is the problem, alcohol is used for many medical purposes that are even go to the human health, hence the abuse is the problem.
Rightly said @sahmie, thank you so much for stopping by to support my publication. I wish to ask, do reviews come immediately or later on? I noticed I haven't gotten a review yet
Upvoted. Thank You for sending some of your rewards to @null. It will make Steem stronger.
You are welcome
Alcoholism and destruction are one, it's a nice way to start the week @b-naj, these facts are very correct especially in our community today, our youths especially suffers this problem of alcoholism which leads to less production in terms of development, your post elaborates more on this as it's one of the problem faced by our society.
Thanks for sharing
Truly it is a big problem that we faced daily in our respective communities. It is also very toxic and contagious. Thank you so much my able @bongk, I appreciate you stopping by to show support.
Hello dear @b-naj, I must commend this post that it is a very elaborate and educating one. One of the way a person can control the intake of alcohol is by changing his or her environment because environment affects our lifestyle, our environment says a lot about who you really are. If everyone in our community drinks alcohol, there is a possibility but we must be involved.
Thank you so much for sharing this post.
Hello @nelsonmartin51, you have said it all. Our environment and friends greatly influences our habits, be it the good or the bad. I am glad to see that we are in agreement with my take on this piece. Thank you for stopping by.
My friend, the way our society normalizes the intake of alcohol to the point that we forget that it's a drug is alarming, kidney failures here and there as a result.
I wish we take back our society by saying no to alcohol or drinking responsibly.
We truly need to help our society, especially the younger ones. It's heartbreaking to see minors drinking, kids between the ages of 13-15 years, swinging by with bottles of alcohol in gatherings. We need to contribute to the wellness of our society, starting within our individual communities.
Thank you so much for stopping by.
Thank you, friend!

The effects of alcoholism can be very serious if not controlled in time, even in extreme cases it can cause death due to excessive consumption.
Of course, if someone who suffers from this is clear about what it can cause in the future if you continue drinking rampantly can take control and prevent all that, could seek help and have willpower to gradually give up this vice.
Greetings, and success in your participation.
Excessive consumption of alcohol affect us socially, mentally, physically, and emotionally as well. All the steps to control the intake of alcohol that you have mentioned are very effective.
The definition of Oxford Dictionary that you have mentioned is one of the famous definitions.
Good luck 👍
